Oh goody, then I'll put up my military experience investigating the combat effectiveness of EMP weapons and my own engineering degree!

Off topic, but:

I read not long ago about a theory of Mars having it's atmosphere blown away by a CME. Due to it's low gravity, the planet couldn't hold it in place. Now, wouldn't that ruin your day!

That happened to me. Happened in the middle of the day. Came home and noticed the fridge was awful loud and the lights real bright. Turned off the main breaker when DH tested the line and we had double coming in the house. He knew right away our neutral was damaged. Neighbors tree. We ended up filing with our home owners. Had to replace a lot. Fried the stereo, TV, Fridge, three large freezers, fans, phones.... anything plugged in.

I bet this was what happened to your friends. Once we started checking stuff, the stuff that was running "hot" did not work after the power was fixed and we turned the breaker back on.

That was a mess!
