But you want to call the stuff that drips out of the meat grinder "pink slime" and add it to the label as something other than meat?
There are plenty of things we can dislike about food, but this histeria about finely ground beef is foolish.

OJ from concentrate is labeled as such.
Honey from China is as well I do believe.(although the reason such adulterated crap is allowed into this country is because of your beloved federal government)
Imported fruit is labeled as such.
It isn't just ground beef,it is cooked, decontaminated, pressed into pellets, and frozen.

If you didn't KNOW it was there from news reports, you certainly wouldn't know from the packaging....so while you aren't FORCED to buy it,you certainly wouldn't know unless you read it elsewhere.

Also, OZ seems to think there is no price difference between ground beef with pink slime and say ground sirloin or chuck without it....not the case in my neck of the woods...there is a significant difference in prices...as in over a buck a pound.

Untrue,I stated there was no difference in ground beef with meat filler or without it,you seem to want to bring in other types of ground meat to muddy the waters.

I will admit to being a beef snob, I like mine from my own herd, I pasture raise mine but like to finish on grain because I like the extra fat (and I could care less if anyone likes that or not), I have a great butcher who comes to the farm and kills a cow on pasture then carts him away for butchering with his nifty truck....and all of that at the end of the day costs a bunch more money (which I can afford) than if I just bought cheap cuts at Wally World. Do I buy the tubes of ground beef that has been processed in the manner decribed by the OP?
|
Perhaps you should then stop worrying about it,it is none of your concern?

No I do not but I am not arrogant enough to try and force my beef preferrences on everyone else.

Well actually you seem to be,you think there is no need to inform the consumer, you seem happier that they remain ignorant.

yes the label does say from concentrate, so I have choice.
do I use frozen juice? yes
from China? no. from Brazil? no.
honey? from a member of our local bee club
Do I buy out of USA fruit and veggies? at times
BUT
I had the choice.
I never said it wasn't meat or beef. I said it sould be labeled so I have a choice.
like with the OJ.

"Pink slime" is treated with ammonia to disinfect it. So, it is not "just beef." In fact, there is concern that the use of ammonia as a disinfectant leads manufacturers to be able to use older, less-fresh meat since it will all be "sanitized" anyway.

A label stating it has up to 25% meat filler seems simple enough, you can still continue to buy it,and others can choose not to.
Of course, freedom of choice is frightening to some, they live for the nanny state.

You have a choice in the matter also.

Minamally processed beef, organic vegetables, fresh fruit, etc cost more money than the cheaper alternatives out there and there is a market for both but I am not so sure its wise to try and vilify a process that has reduced cost and has not been proven to be harmful.

nope not trying to push anything. I do think that we should all be given full discloser as to what goes into our food so we can make our own choices.

Even easier, just put on the label:
"Up to 25% beef filler added".
Easy enough for most to grasp.
Why do you want people to not know?

Altered food?
If I grind up beef and get two piles, one that looks like hamburger and one that looks like pink slime, aren't they all ground beef?
We alter food by mixing it, chopping it, cooking it.
If I were rich I could buy organic vegetables that don't have pesticides in them. But since I'm poor, I have to buy grocery store vegetables that don't have pesticides in them. None of it has pesticides, just the rich folk get to choose. They just buy a false sense of peace. If you couldn't feel like you were better than poor folk, what good is money?
Pink Slime is a straw dog. You are fretting about finely ground beef added to ground beef, while 16 year old worn out dairy cows with swollen joints gets chopped into your Lean Cusine. 99% of the food imported goes uninspected. Invasive insects are discovered weekly on random border checks.

I am poor
but I eat mostly organic veg fruit because I raise my own. I use organic practices for the most parts with my livestock.
don't eat prefab frozen dinners to much $ for crap. and I know most import are not checked BUT we are told the country of origin.
I am a live and let live.. if some wants to eat the altered food (heat treated and spun....) that is up to them BUT they should be freely given the right to choose.
wonder if they are considered it deceptive if they sell it as 100% fresh ground beef when there are bits of once frozen in it.
hummm

wow
fresh poultry has to be "never been frozen" but they don't have the definition for fresh beef. wonder why...... now we know.
and
"CHEMICAL FREE:
The term is not allowed to be used on a label."
hummmm I guess they are afraid that people would prefer it.
