FBB, I recommended strength training to you in another thread. Sounds like maybe it's time to stop making excuses.

Electric starters are insanely expensive. I bought a Simplicity snowblower with electric start. The electric start went out so I pulled the motor and switch assembly and tested them out. The bridge rectifier was bad. I called a Simplicity dealer to get a new bridge rectifier. They said they only could get the entire switch and starter motor assembly and wanted what I paid for the whole snowblower. I found a rectifier through another source and it works fine.
Whats worse are engines where there is no rope pull option. Either the electric start or nothing. I am stubborn and would figure out how to adapt a rope pull. Like you say a new starter costs as much as a whole stupid engine.

The sane way to go about it if you want electric start is to price the starter for a particular engine before you buy that engine. Then you will know if its worth it to you as you will probably have to replace the electric starter at least once.

And as far as bargains on new engines, check out Harbor Freight when engines go on sale. They have this marketing game using coupons either available online or if you ever buy anything from their retail stores you will get circular. Some more rare coupons in back of electric coop monthly circular. The engines are imitation Honda design, the 11hp and 13hp anyway have electric starter with them. They are decent enough engine when deeply discounted. The 6.5hp goes as cheap as $99 on sale. It doesnt come with electric start, but starts very easily in my experience. This is cheap for a NEW engine. Weakness is cheapo air cleaner assembly and the gas tanks rust out. Otherwise they seem to hold up ok. But since they are Honda clone, the Honda parts will fit if you have a mind to upgrade. And parts are available all over, regular Honda parts will generally retrofit, but lot of the clone parts sold on ebay and such places.

I would never ever get another snowblower without an electric starter.
My MTD is now 14 years old and I have never had one bit of trouble with the electric starter. Course it does have a rope pull IF it does kill out away from the electric outlet, but I have never had it stall away from the plug in.
And with a 10 HP engine, BOY am I ever glad it does have one. When cold etc. electricity is sure better to use then arm muscles.~!
And I have a 20 year old MTD Lawn-tractor 18 hp, that also has a electric starter, that runs off a battery, and even that old never had one bit of trouble with it.
Electric starters are the way to go IMO. Then only thing I have had to do on the lawn-tractor starter is replace the plastic gear that flies up and engages the flywheel, but that is easy to replace and very very inexpensive at that.

The engine on my TB Tuffey came from HF when the origional T went near to hail

XR. Ive had flat feet all my life. The docs say that all my foot bones need to be broken and reset. Take 4 to 6 mos to heal, and they only do one at a time.
