Tallpines, we could get nothing with a roof antenna or I would have gone that route, too.

Arabian Knight......
Have you tried a roof antenna?
I'm not sure where you are located but I'm thinking not that far from me.
Can't you get the Eau Claire and LaCrosse stations for Free?
The only time we "need" more than the FREE stuff is when the Packer games are on ESPN.
At those times we need to drive to DD's home.

We're going without any Satellite right now. We just rent from netflix every now and then. It's amazing how much more productive you become after the withdrawals. More books and more time spent with the kids without felling like you're missing your favorite show.

We simply fired our tv 4 years ago, and have never missed it! A lot more gets done around here, and we just watch movies. When we went into Goodwill to buy some vhs tapes (only .49 each, and 50% off occasionally, too), chatted with some young gals. They told me tv was crap and they wouldn't waste $ on cable or anything, fired their tv's a few years ago... LOL Save $$$, fire your tv!

Our daughter and son-in-law bought us Roku last summer and a roof antenna. We get all the local channels, stream Netflix for $8.00 and Huluplus for $8.00, plus have added some free channels. The only thing I miss is HGTV and the weather channel. Our direct TV had gone up about $3.00 a month for several months in a row and their customer service is the worst.

It sure has been quiet around here the last few days with the tv OFF.
I'm thinking homestead production is going to increase any day now, LOL
Getting local news/weather on the radio and internet OK.
Is there a 12 step program for tv junkies ?

I dropped DTV. I put up a rotating antenna. I get CBS, ABC, and PBS. Also FOX if the wind isn't moving the antenna.
I have a 5 Mb/sec computer hook up and landline phone for $63 a month. There isn't too much live programming on the internet yet but there is more every year. NBC does put Sunday night football on the internet, live, for free. They also had the playoff games they carried and the superbowl on the internet.
I can watch delayed broadcasts of the shows on the major networks, re-runs of old shows on HULU, and there are a few other sites with old re-runs. All for free. At least one of the local stations delayed broadcasts their weather so if I miss the broadcast I can get it off the web.
There are many shows on the web that you have to pay for. I won't pay, there is enough free.

Sure I have a roof antenna. I do that in case the satellite to cable goes out and I still can the Packers play.
And yes I watch Me tv off air, THIS TV off air.
But I do a WHOLE bunch of Cable canals watching, including Speed, which carries Many Nascar races and all the time trials etc.
TV IS my entertainment, I am retired on Disability, and TV is my sometimes 24/7 entertainment. So if I can get my Total Package that is DSL internet, Cable TV and Telephone to come in at around 130 to 150 a month that is not bad imo. And if I can keep cable channels at around 60 to 70 of that I am doing pretty good.
And if I can get a 18 month "Deal" on a 24 month contract, that will be nice.

I will be calling my local Telephone CO.
They will be putting in Fiber Optics directly to the house in just a few months.
I am going to see what their total package is.
I will then get cable TV channels over the DSL telephone lines.
Let me see how much lower in price that may get me.
So I may also be dumping Direct.
At least if I go with a Packaged Deal from my Telephone CO. I will then have unlimited Long Distance calling. And at least 6Mbs of DSL speed. I am at 2Mbs now

I've heard we're suppose to be getting something to do with fiber optics here, hope so, can't wait to dump these cats.

I had to dump my TV 3 years ago when I became a trucker. Now I have a chance to watch TV and I rather not! It's amazing how being away from it for awhile changes a person's perspective. I couldn't be bothered with it anymore.

BTW, if you all think back to when cable TV first came out, the big selling feature was that you could watch TV WITHOUT COMMERCIAL INTERRUPTION.
What happened to that promise?

I like dish because it is a lot cheaper than a run to town when I get bored. I'm pretty isolated so internet and tv makes the days a little less dull.
What I did notice between direct and dish is that dish seems to have a lot more infomercials going on regular channels late at night. I sometimes suffer from insomnia so the informercials can be an issue. They both are guilty of counting music only channels, shopping channels and other unpopular channels as part of their lineup. Top 120 quickly turns into only 20 viewable or semi-interesting at our house.
I would love an ala carte option where I pay per channel and can pick exactly what I want since each package seems to have a mix of this and a mix of that but never all of what I want and plenty of what I don't.

We have neither. Spend less time watching the tube and more time with family and outdoors.

The Wife and I decided to ditch the TV about 7 years ago. For 4 years we didn't even have a TV set. We bought a new flat panel TV about 3 years ago, but all we use it for is netflix and slide shows. Don't miss it, and I grew up in a house with a TV going all the time.

We dont do anything for entertainment but TV and we dont have any access to TV without either Direct or Dish.
We started with Dish but it went out constantly, we were always having to call tech support to have them come out and replace the box.
A couple of years ago we switched over to Direct. It does work better, doesnt go out. We have the medium package, but we have two units, HD and all the local channels.
Unfortunatly it does coszt 95.00 a month and I do think that is rediculous.
Maybe I will check with Dish and see what kind of package they will offer us. We also dont have landline telephone, or anyway to get it, so I dont think many of those package deals would work.

wow here everyone is dumping dish and changing to direct t v cause dish dropped all of the local channels from their broadcasting and direct t v has all the local channels available..
I wouldn't keep a service that didn't provide local channels either..we have direct t v and like it , but it is expensive.

We have never had cable or Direct TV or an antenna. Our family members think we're nuts; but I think that they are nuts. I just simply don't understand where people find the money. We get by on just $31 high speed, wireless internet in my house.
We've had the house for eight years. For the first six years, we only had high speed internet. What little TV we watched would be online. Then, about two years ago, my parents bought us a Roku. We watch Amazon (newly released movies) like it's paperview, and we watch Netflix for $8 a month.
But, truthfully, we both are starting to not like the Roku. We get more done and enjoy life more when we are doing more productive activities during our down time - reading books and magazines, listening to music, crafts, cooking, canning, etc. I'm actually learning the guitar. But my favorite evenings are the times when we engage in conversation.
People think that we are crazy. But I'd rather spend time doing things that are productive than have my eyes glued to Hollywood propaganda. Truthfully, sometimes, watching TV makes me feel dirty.

Having spent years in theatres, I've got a pretty good idea what you mean. There is a lot out there that is not worth watching. There are a lot of tv shows that are even worse. Sometimes I feel like a picker trying to find the rare good stuff amongst the junk.

Dish does seem to be cheaper with a better remote and more options. However I've heard over the air tv is more reliable in emergencies. Think I may go to an antenna or maybe no TV at all. How much more time we would have!
Also beware of the new contracts the Satellite TV companies are now requiring. Seems they are now demanding Direct Debit payments up front. Just give your checkbook to a stranger instead! It happed to me that's why I will never do direct debit. They can take whatever, whenever they wish and you can hollar all you want. You'll get it back when they decide if at all..
