they probably are....they are just fancy carp. However throughout their live, they have been exposed to many chemicals used in parasite control. These are not chemicals labeled for food fish.

The small gold fish in the picture are goldfish. The big white ones are koi. Our set up had a 50 gallon horse trough and a 100 gallon horse trough with lava rock, raised off the bottom and an an air tube to the bottom. Potted plants were on top of the lava rock. You need plants to use the nutrients caused by the fish. The waterfall in the photo aerates the water, but I don't see plants other than the two water lilies. They probably have a filtration system behind the waterfall.

I have a 1000 gallon tank for my aquaponics system. I raise goldfish in it. Sometimes I will sell a few of the large ones to a local pet store. I just noticed last week the goldfish were spawning.
Goldfish will get larger than koi but the really large ones loose the slick fish shape and are sort of large gold blobs of fish.

no, goldfish will not get larger than koi. Koi can grow to over 36". Most don't that big but many do. Koi can easily grow to over 24" in just a couple of years.
Check out this video...
Koi this size are very common with high end hobbyists.

trying to send a pic but not having any luck.
The world-record accreditation organization has now confirmed that the goldfish, named Herbert by the scuba-diver, measures a staggering 2.5 meters long (8 feet 20 inches) by 1.70 meters tall (5 feet 57 inches).
May be a trick.

The world record for a golfdish was in England a couple of years ago...it was 19" long. The link you are talking about was indeed a trick.

19" should be much easier to break than 8'20".
I should have been suspicious when it said 8'20" instead of 9'8"
Wonder what points they measure from on the fish? If it is from the nose to the end of the tail fins I am well over half way there now.

Koi and goldfish are measured from the tip of the nose to the tip of the tail fin. Butterfly koi (which are not true koi, but a hybrid) are measured to the beginning of the tail though since the length of the tail varies so much in those fish.

Thanks.
Some of my goldfish have long tails and some short. Guess I had better take good care of the long tailed ones.
They were just feeder goldfish when I put them in the tank.

Enjoying the thread.
My inspection at this house was today ... lots of bad news all the way around. Termites, mold, water in crawl space, deck not to code, animal damage in crawl space, one heat pump not working, foundation problem in one spot.
Needless to say I am walking away from the deal.
But, the koi pond has made me want to look into building one at the house I am in. I wonder how much one like my photo would cost.

sorry the house didn't work out. If you decide you do want a pond, consider doing it yourself. It's nearly impossible to get a pond builder to do it right. Most of them are landscapers and can make you a really pretty pond, but also one that's poorly designed with inadequate filtration, no bottom drain and rocks in the bottom. Decide if you want a water garden, where plants are the main focus or if you want a koi pond where raising healthy koi are the focus. If you want a water garden you should probably limit yourself to goldies because large koi are hard on plants. They literally shread them to pieces. If you do want a koi pond, go to a koi forum for advise. Make sure its a KOI forum and not a watergardening forum or you will get bad advise. Thepondforum.com is good, koishack.com is another one. Koibito.com is a very high end koi forum but they can be a little unfriendly there to newbies. The other two are good....thepondforum is probably the friendliest one.
You can easily DIY ponds though. I designed and built my ponds myself and I'm a 50-something woman.

Why not consider an aquaponics setup?
Have the best of both worlds.
