Do not want a wind farm near my homestead.

However, a wind farm is going to be built, and we will be smack dab in the middle of it, 50 to 80 of those things.

After we moved "back home," a landfill was was developed 2 miles away, accepting waste from mostly New York, an ethanol refinery is 5 miles north that we can see. And now, a wind farm. It's just too much.

Many communities mount opposition, to wind farms and win ,either with longer setbacks or outright bans.

It's your life too.

The repair bay doors face the back of my house, too, and the sound of the air powered lug nut drivers is MOST irritating. Day, night, all the time.
Alice - I think I remember that you have Nubians. You should have them all line up along the fenceline and yell at the top of their lungs while the drivers are trying to sleep. That should certainly drown out the air tools and keep the drivers awake!

If you can stand the noise and the rocking motion that they give out then go ahead. The noise is so low in the spectrogram that most people can not hear it until they get too close but it is constant and will cause migraines. The sway is their but not notifiable until you put a put a bowl of water in the area and see how it shifts.

I wouldn't want to be near 40 of them. We have wind generators in the next county. They do not lower property values, but they are few and far between at this point.

For those that may have to decide to be for, or against wind power, in their area, may want to take a look.

This is a very long video and only tells one side of the story, but it showcases how one family's dream homestead, absolutely turned into a nightmare, when the wind turbines came in. This was a presentation in my local community. Their story sounds typcial, as many communities are now starting to mount opposition against these installations.

It's more than just ironic, IMO, that all (except for one) of the wind turbine owners, do not live anywhere in the area.

NIMBY Rocks!

Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.

It is nice, hearing from people that are living with nasty energy (coal, gas, nuclear) saying they'd rather be near a clean wind farm.

Irrelevant, but I see those monster long loads of turbine blades several times a week, headed north. Apparently they make em in the midwest, float em down the Mississippi, over to the Houston Ship Channel, and then truck em up US 59... always wondered why they didn't just ship em by truck, westwards to their final source, instead of making a big ol circle...

No they make them in Little Rock at the port on the Arkansas River. They ship them by water to the nearest port then by truck because they are so long and may not take the turns like they want them to.

Ok I watched the Utube videos, and I have been in the middle of wind farms, but I have never lived near a wind turbine. But I guess I am wierd, I like them, I like the way they look I think they are very restful.
I dont hear the noise, one guy said they sounded like a jet engine.......hahahaha I live in a flyway where military jets use the bridge by my house to practice their targeting bombing. Believe me wind turbines dont sound ANYTHING like jet engines!! LOL Also lived in Virginia Beach, we called the jet engines "the sound of freedom." Maybe the wind turbine sounds should be "the sound of freedom from foreign oil?"
I dont really understand the "shadow flicker." Does it happen all the time during the day, or only at certain hours?? It didnt bother me in the videos, actually if it only happened during certain hours I would think I would ude it to tell what time it was........maybe I am just strange.
I would love to be able to have a wind turbine on my property, however my county has outlawed them.
I disagree.

That would drive me insane. I never thought of that issue before reading this thread.

It may not seem that way, but I'm really a huge believer in wind energy. it's just that there is a right way and a wrong way, to implement wind power.

It needs to be apparent to everyone, that there is a huge difference, between owning one or two, small wind generators, installed in your own back yard, powering your own home, verses "living" amongst (30-50) Corporate owned, masssive, 400 foot tall wind monsters, with 100' blades, whose tips move upwards of 125MPH.

The former is a reasonable priced alternative, that the homeowner should start receiving instant payback, with lower electricity bills. In time, it may even reduce consumption to 20%, like the Govt want. Great way to get green power.

The latter, is usually a much different story.

Most of these behemoth generators are built overseas, in foreign countries. The U.S. cannot afford to buy them, so we are borrowing the money, to buy them, from the same countries, that are selling them to us. This might make perfect sense, on some planet, but not this one.

Carpetbagger "energy Companies", slip into town and quietly start getting signed land leases, from farmers, impressed with the opportunity to make some easy money. County Planning Comissions, eager for the attention of "being green" and some extra property tax bucks (even maybe leasing some of their farmland), hastily give zoning variances, without truely understanding what a commercial wind farm is all about. The out-of-state construction companies, bring in their own workers and buy materials, from the cheapest source, even if it is out of the local area. They constuct the generators and then move on, leaving no local jobs.

By the time the local Citizens, truely understand what is going on, the wind farms are up and operating. Whatever problems arise, with noise or shadow flicker, etc. are their problems to deal with alone.

To make matters worse, the generated electricity, probably will not even be used locally. It will be shipped hundreds of miles away (at ahuge expense) and sold for top-dollar.

Once the wind farms are operational, it is too late to do anything about them.

That is why we are putting up a fight, before they are ever built. If we have our way, they will not be built in our county.

FWIW, I welcome anyone who wants their own, reasonably sized wind generator, in their own own yard (no 400 footers, please ).
