Here's our hawk solution. We were losing one a day, and they were only eating about a 1/4 of the bird. I even left a few out hoping an easy meal would keep them from killing again...nope. Our coop has a PVC base so we can electrify the entire thing, keeps all manner of predator out as well as feed stealing goats and sheep. Our neighbor has seen the hawk perched on the top and I occasionally find hawk feathers where one has tried to attack and crashed into the chicken wire.

Every hawk from Springfield to West Plains comes to Mike's little 11 acres, where we have our tiny chicken flock. There are so many things in the hawk's way that they have trouble making an attack. That plastic netting really seems to scare them. After a couple of trys they usually give up for the day.

Mike is planing to put an air whistle over the shop that can be turned on from the house. The air conpressor is on anyway so why not use it. The whistle could also be used if someone at the house needs help. It is only a half mile to the neighbor's house.

I read (I think on this forum,) where someone was using temporary electric netting for their chickens while they were out on pasture and were also keeping several goats in the same enclosure. They said that had eliminated the bird of prey issue. I haven't tried this one myself yet but might be better than using turkeys since turkeys can catch things from chickens that are deadly to the turkey.

I would think that a corn supply placed out where crows feel secure, they will come.

I have a good friend of mine who practices falconry, I have seen this bird chase rabbits into briar patches that you would not think of crawling through. Whenever his falcon records a kill, he splits the chest cavatie open and lets it eat the lungs.

We never had ANY predator problems when we ran our goats/sheep with our chickens. In the weeks following the sale of our four legged stock, we lost half our flock, it was like they were waiting...

You may also think about getting a blowup (fake) owl. My nieghbor says he hasn't had a hawk around in a few months. Worth a try, the owl cost $5.00.

Get good guardian dogs. Our dogs keep hawks, eagles, crows, ravens and owls from landing. They stalk the predators and the predatory birds know it is too dangerous to come down here.

Had an old style sheltie that watched the skies constantly, would bark and make a fuss when she saw any large bird, and then she'd run and herd her biddies to safety. She was a hoot.

I don't want crows around. They steal eggs and chicks and ruin vegetable gardens.

I think it probable depends on how hungry a hawk is that has a lot to do with what it takes to keep it away.

Really? I've never seen a crow in our vegetable garden. Nor have I lost eggs or chicks to them. I guess crows - and hawks, for that matter - are a bigger problem in some areas than others.
