BILL <> How much milk are you useing now?? How much does it cost you?? How many times would you go out twice a day and milk a fly swatting kicking old hay burner, then put her out to pasture after fixing the fence every month where she busted it down going out looking for a lover, for what your milk costs you??? If you aren't willing to over power a nanny goat and milk her, how are you going to do a heifer??

If you know me by my posts, or have seen my pics, you would see I dont have a way of loading round bales. My boy and his FIL ahd DDILs mom came out here with FILs Tinker Toy Tractor and trailer and loaded them.
To me they just about milk the same. Ive milked both. If there used to being milked, I dont see a difference in the ease of milking them. IF both tits are the same length.
Granny & Tany Id like to get that info please. Does he sell them one day old or weined.

Not to sound rude.... but, what makes you think milking a freshing cow will be any easier to milk than a goat? If you are looking for an experienced milker cheap........ good luck!

She sounds like a typical goat getting used to being milked.
I never 'met' a goat that looked forward to being milked on her first round of being milked.
People have been known to get broken bones when trying to milk cows for the first time..........never heard of hat happening with a goat.
Good luck in your earch.

Unc. I wouldnt mind milking a cow twice a day much. I dont mind feeding 80 some rabbits twice a day. It gets me out, and keeps me busy. I dont drink a drop of milk now. I dont buy it. I would likely drink a gal at least a day as I LOVE GOOD C O L D jersey/gurnsey/brown swiss milk.
I cant run anymore. When my goat didnt want to be milked, she knew what I was up to with roap in hand, as I would have to pull her up the stantion.
In raiseing a calf into a cow, id have time to tame her and gain her trust. IF, when it came time to milk her, and I couldnt do it, Id sell her for one that WAS used to being milked.
I could do that with this goat, but Im kinda hopeing to start a herd of nubs, and if she wont let me milk her, but proves to be a good mother, That could work.
Kaz. I was kinda hopeing thast when peoples hay ran out, theyed have to sell cheaper. People here are GIVEING away horses, and in some instances, people wont take them. Neighbor just had one givin to him thats a Tenn walker, or at least part. The guy down the road said he had offered it to 6 other people before neighbor took it.

I see Tim is selling his calves for $350, and hes buying them from some [lace. I KNOW that theres a cattle sale down by Big Mac somewhere N of there 30 miles or so. I tried to call the sale I go to to find out where and when it is. No response. The people who own/run it are amish. They used to have a big cattle sale at Pryor but it burnt down. Same people owned it own the sale I go to. Im pretty sure they know where the amish take their cows to sale now.

Bill - do you feed your goat on the stanchion? The way to train them is not to feed them till they are on there, feed them something yummy the first few times, then as she starts getting with the program, gradually start mixing it with the dairy ration. Feed the buck after the evening milking. That way the doe will be waiting at the door at milking time.
I have to admit that the one I'm milking now can be a cantankerous old gal when she wants. Well, more mischievous - but I can about guarantee that as soon as she sees me coming down the path with a jug in my hand she gets up, pees and poops, and walks to the door of the barn. I open the door and she jumps on the stand and sticks her head through the headgate. She gets a mixture of grain and alfalfa pellets while she is being milked. I put feed out for everyone (including her) after the evening milking. That isn't as delicious as her stanchion feed, though, which is why she is so eager to get up there.
Is this your doe's first freshening? If not - it could be that her previous owner milked her differently than you. The one I am milking right now I had since she was a youngster, so I am the only one that has ever milked her. I have another one that I bought who had an excellent record, and I couldn't understand why she refused to let down, or even let me near her udder. I figured out that the previous owner would sit on a stool at her side, facing her rear end and milked with both hands from the front. I sit on the stand, facing her head and milk left-handed from behind. That was freaking her out. Sometimes you just have to spend a bit of time observing and/or trying out new stuff. Phone calls help, too. <G>
Just one other thought - if your doe won't let you near her to catch her for milking, she is likely to teach her kids to stay away from you, too. So you would be back to square one.

Bill, I don't mean any disrespect but I don't think you realize what you are getting into. My very old Jersey cow--- Holly is over 8yo-- only milks from 2 teats and she gives over 3 gallons of milk a day.... I have another young Jersey that is a rescue case that I only milk once a day because she is so very thin. Even in as bad a shape as she was when I got her, she gives about that much milk, too. I have 4 kids and I still have to bottle feed a calf and make butter or cheese every blessed day. I still pour a bunch to the cats, dogs, and chickens.....
I milk goats, too. ( Thank goodness they are dry right now!) I think you need a better goat than what you have. I have some Alpine and Saanen does that are not good milkers that give 3 quarts a day.

Tana, I was born raised on a dairy farm. We hand milked around 10/12 cows, seperated the milk from cream and sold both. We had the biggert milk check on the route, and the 2nd biggest egg check. I milked dads 2 or 3 cows until I left for the army in 67. Started home and milked for a couple years. havnt milked a cow here in near 26yrs.
I need alot better goat for milking than I now have. Hopefully, shes about to drop
I have alot of grass around my machinery that is watered slowly by a pond above it. It grows lush and heavy, I would let the cow s run all around the barnyard, machinery yard, yard during daytime, and lock her/them up in the lot at night. The goats dont make hardly any dent in the grass, and the weeds arent that bad,
I am retired now. I have lots of time, and im home all day nearly, other than Wed and Fri when I donate plasma, but im back home usually by 9 if not before.

Point taken, Bill! LOL!! Somehow, I just got the idea that you only wanted a little milk...... I wish that I just had a little milk. My incredibly fat cats turn up their nose at it these days.

We fed milk to the hogs and chickens after we quit selling milk. Ive ate dads milk and grand oats or corn or both mash for the hogs. It was good. Our cats only got milk only.
I could feed excess milk to momma rabbits, and the chickens.

Just called a # 918 869 8139 Im positive hes getting them from the Stillwell Cattle Auction. Said he had some bottle calves, $125. Said he sell me a 50# bag of MFA milk replacer for $86. That way id keep them on the same milk replacer they had started on thus lessinging the chance of scours in switching them onto something else.Im going to wait for a month when the grass starts so that, when weined, I can turn them onto grass handlily
