I'm with AK on this one. I did not own the equipment with Dish, and paid $5/month. They never charged me one penny for having to replace my shoddy equipment five times in two years.
They wanted the eyes from the dish back, which they had mounted high on the corner of my roof. I told them, I have no ladder tall enough to get up there, and wouldn't risk it, even if I did. "You want 'em, you're welcome to come get 'em. They're not going anywhere." They said "just leave them".

Having been a customer of both providers I can provide a little insight I personally found. I had Dish for just short of 14 years. I, as you, was paying yearly dues to save money. Almost two years ago, when they started offering the "Free HD for life" I asked to get the server for life and they told me I could only do so if I agreed to go to a month to month billing cycle, which essentially erased the savings on Free HD. I told them I was not willing to do that considering I was not going to get any savings in that manner and they refused to help me out as a long term customer.
I switched to Direct TV that weekend and they were out to install that following Monday. After the 2 year agreement is up, it will be slightly more expensive than what I was paying for Dish, but I fully expect by that time, I will turn off the cable outright and rely on Netflix and rabbit ears to watch what I want. Most TV shows are available on the programmers website anymore. May not be there day 1, but close enough since I end up watching them on DVR most of the time anyway.
Never going back to Dish and Direct TV has been decent in the almost 2 years I have been with them.

When my Direct guy came out to install, I told him I didn't want it in my back room because I only use that TV for a computer monitor for my desktop system. He told me that, most people don't realize that almost every flat screen TV now can pick up local channels with just rabbit ears. He pulled out a set and hooked them up to show me. Sure enough, if I ever cancel my sat tv, I know I can still get my locals for a <$20 set of rabbit ears.
Maybe y'all knew that, but I didn't. It was "cool find" for me.

I had Dish for a long time and it was basically ok. Then all of a sudden they dropped the NFL network. Access to the games is why I pay money for tv! So I switched to Direct tv. So farm they've been great. In between I bought a converter box and tried using the antenna, but I can't get any of the broadcast channels. It would be kind fo useless anyways; I only use the locals for news and football. I never watch any of the crime dramas or sit coms, instead preferring Discover, History, and so on.
It is expensive and difficult on a tight budget Hopefully some day I'll get the channels I want over the comptuer and won't need the sat. dish anymore.
And I'll get in the friend line! If anyone is interested in signing up with Direct Tv, if you use my account number as a referral, we will both get 10.00 off the bill for ten months. I can be your friend!

I had direct TV for 1 1/2 years, most of the time it was ok, weather could make it go out though and generally there wasn't anything on. So I dropped them and made "the switch", and just put on a set of rabbit ears and recive 20 digital HD Channels that have just as much on as satilite with a better picture for free! We do however supliment it with netflix for $8 a month.

We have direct now. Former Dish users neither will give you a price break until you switch to the other one. Get a contract every two years while switching and you save 50% the first year, 25% the second. When they are back to the same price at the end of the contract, switch back.

I was on the phone with Dish yesterday & told them i wanted to upgrade my old receiver as i got a new tv. they told me it would cost $99.00,i told them not gonna pay that & i would got with direct, they changed their mind real quick & had to me to talk to a manager,so she told me they would come install a new dish & get new receivers for free & my bill would go down from $76.99 a month to $56.99 for the first year then $66.99 from now on if i kept the top 250 channels which i just got in October to get the Hallmark/Nat go channels.......
guess what i am saying is you can BARGAIN with them as they don't want to loose you as a customer-not sure how this compares to Direct but it is cheaper bill now for me....

The place you need to be posting this is the SATELLITE GUYS FORUM. They cater to all forms of pay and free tv, installation, problems ect and they folks there are VERY helpful. Many are installers and the powers that be from DTV and DISH do seem to read the threads there. That's the one place I go to deal with any issue, period and always get good results. I had a problem way back wanting DVR and they wouldn't sell me one all the while they were handing them out for free to new customers. Someone told me to just buy my own which I did and dish refused to allow me to use it. I posted it as a what to do now question and someone told me to send an email to dishexec stating my quandry which I did. In the time it took for me to take a shower I had a phone call from someone obviously high up the food chain telling me to hook it up and all was fine. Of course my email was polite and wondered if I was ever going to be able to use it or should I just ebay the DVR. On other instances I have had various little issues and they have been more helpful than not. Lately I notice that it's hard to get much out of them though just as a general observation. Still, we just got a new HDTV while I was beginning to worry about the age of my now ancient 525 DVR. We had been paying month to month for years and ended up getting them to give us HDTV with new (their) dvr reciever and installation for $1 more a month than I was paying currently. Not bad at all .
What I am driving on here rather than some glowing review is that Dish, and probably Direct will make deals with you though they may not offer them straight up. You might have to play lets make a deal or just offer up that the other guy is having such and such a deal and for them to tell you why you shouldn't just leave. You may get such advice / encouragement and the accompanying "they did this or not that for me" replys from Satellite guys which can be quite helpful.
