I use Johnson Family Nursery in Ellijay, Georgia. They use a semi-dwarf root stock on their apples, and they stock varieties that do well in southern orchards.
If you want to plant standard trees, why not look around for root suckers on near by trees that you like?

If it's a fairly common tree, I like to get it from a local nursery because I can pick the one I feel has the best scaffolding now. Some I have ordered from really reputable growers have had a growth that took a couple of years to get re-started the way I want.
But if you are looking for unusual varieties, then you must go online or catalog. I look for specialized growers as close to my area as possible.

Thanks a lot for the ideas and links, y'all. With this being a fairly long range food plan I certainly didn't want to take a chance on an unknown company.

You can always check local nurseries. Be picky in what you look for. However, my healthiest and most successful trees have come from Lowe's. I get the ones in the 5 gal bucket size and they have done extremely well. I am getting ready to buy some 20-30 trees this spring and plan on working with Lowe's to see what kind of deal I can get. I will also take another peruse through local nuseries as well.

I've ordered from Lawyer Nursery for many years. Well packaged. They are in Montana, but grow a lot in Washington, too.
Know what kind of dwarf or semi-dwarf you want.

Had one die.....they replaced it QUICK!!
I have apple and pear. My raspberries came from Stark Bros also....they are insane!!
I highly recommend them. Good healthy products. Great customer service when / if something goes wrong.

I think my success with trees has only been about 50% over the last 4 years. A few trees never grew at all, some died during the 1st year, and some died the 2nd year. If they make it through 2 years, they seem to be OK.

I wouldn't call a tree from Home Depo "local". They are shipped from all over the place. I stick with Stark because in the long run, they are better trees and produce higher yeilds for more years.

We had great luck with trees, shrubs & berry bushes from Gurney Nurseries. They are out in the Dakotas. So, their plants are hardy.
It's been over 10 years since we needed to buuy anything though. So.........

I have had wonderful results ordering from Gurney's. I got one of their "Lil-Big" red delicious trees and it was perfect, fruited in the second year, and never grew more than about 7 feet high. Exactly what they advertised. Good apples.
I also have some of their blueberries, Dwarf Tophat, still going strong after many years in the same container (even after moving to a new state).
I'll definitely order from Gurney's again.

Yes, when I ordered from Starks, they had a written lifetime guarentee. It was the next year they filed bankruptcy, and altho I don't know for sure, I heard the employees bought it.
The best trees I've ever purchased was from Raintree nursery, The extra for shipping was well worth it. Gurneys? well, I ordered a cherry, they sent a pear, when I complained, it was a "oh, well". I had to argue to get my money back.

For anyone in the PNW, Bimart sells excellent bare root fruit trees. My best trees have come from BiMart, and they are half the price of the good quality mail order nurseries.
They offer a decent selection but not an extensive selection. If they happen to have a variety that you want, grab it up. I've got a $50 walnut tree from an expensive nursery, a $22 bare root walnut tree from a good mail order nursery, and a walnut tree from BiMart that was marked down to half price so I paid $5.50 for it.
Guess which tree is by far the best one, the healthiest, the fasted growing. Yup, the $5.50 tree from BiMart.
My apricot trees from BiMart are far and away the best apricot trees on my place and the prune trees from BiMart are doing better than my expensive plum trees.
I am assuming that all the BiMarts get their trees fro the same source as my local BiMarts. Whoever it is that has the contract to provide their fruit trees grows a heck of a good tree.
