Startupman, have you been visiting the area much? Next time we go down, we were hoping to meet a few folks from HT.

Springfield has everything you would want. If you need a job, medical care, big box stores, entertainment, restaurants, etc, it would be a great place to live.

We live in the West Plains area and it suits us fine. Wages are low. It is a beautiful place and we have met many good people here. You need to patient with repairmen, because it usually take 2 or 3 times to get a job done right.

Our place is about 45 miles east of West Plains. Very few jobs, low socioeconomic, so it helps if you are retired or independently wealthy.

Nobody mentioned the ticks or chiggers yet, so I will. LOTS of both in the warmer weather.

Our DD wants to name our place "P'Ivy Acres" with a sign at the gate that says "Tick Ranch and Lyme Disease research center". Should cut down on trespassers.

LOL!

When we first moved here, the ticks were abundant. We had been listening to Zappa (the song where he talks about having a dental floss ranch), and we toyed with the idea of naming this place Tick-n-floss (German spelling: Tichenfloß).

We learned this past weekend that the snakes are more numerous in the SW part of the state as well. <sigh> Ever since that whole apple thing, snakes have been an annoying reality...

We have been near the Mountain Grove area a little over a year. We have an awesome church, everyone is friendly (but in fairness it took them about 6 months to lighten up about us), we have what we need, our chickens take care of the ticks pretty well, our dogs must discourage the snakes, pigs help till the rocks out of the ground, goats eat the brush...yeppers we pretty much love it here.

I'm about 5 miles from the Arkansas line in Stone County.
The work is too seasonal,it can get pretty slim pickins' in the winter.
I work 3 different part time jobs to get by.

Yes,the natives are very stand-offish,you're best to keep your nose in

We live in "OZARK"

Sw mo pretty much equidistant from Springfield and Branson. It is Christian county..one of the fastest growing places around the area.
We love it here...it has some of the best people and are around.

We live in Dallas County-about an hour north of Springfield-and I'd totally agree with gone-a-milking and Big Rock Pile. I have been here 7 years now. I love the area, could do without the bugs in spring and summer, but there's no paradise on Earth.

You'd best watch anything you have that has copper in it; such things disappear mysteriously. But our neighbors are great, very supportive and friendly.

Husband is related to half the county so his first advice to me was; "Don't badmouth ANYONE until you know who is related to who around here, and even then they might be related to that someone else by marriage."

I'd say that's true anywhere, but for sure in small towns/rural areas.

We figured out that everyone has a connection to someone. We have always held our tongues, and good thing, too!

Of course, when a person who has been here forever starts talking about someone, it's hard not to listen... Never add anything, of course, but you know, they're just sharing information...

Don't have your heart surgery done in West Plains. There's a surgeon there who used to be on staff at my previous employer, and he likes to make patients crash so he can rescue them. Can't believe he's still licensed, let alone not in jail.

I live in a small town near Springfield - moved here in August - and man, it's sure hard to meet people. Any suggestions?

If you like dairy goats, I have a couple of thoughts...

Srsly, there are usually livestock and other "special interest" groups that meet together.

Don't know what/which town you're in, but some folks find community in a structured church (lower case "c") group. There may also be Kiwanis, or FFA, or 4H...

As I mentioned, Nick and I were hoping to meet up with some HTers next trip down. You could see if someone is close to you.

I'd sure like to meet you. I love meeting fellow 'steaders. Just ask Muller's Lane Farm (Cyndi and sometimes Paul). They can't get rid of me, even though we're more than 6 hours apart.

ETA: There's Emiliy too, but since I already mentioned we spent the weekend with her, I figgered it went without saying. The fact that I have her on speed dial for goat emergencies does NOT mean I am stalking her... probably....

Norwood is about 45 min to the West of me. I'd LOVE to meet you next time you're down this way. I haven't been to Emily's new place yet. I'll bet you guys had a great visit. Oh, If I weren't already settled in here, I'd surely take a look at Norwood.

P.S. Emily's on my speed dial for emergencies, too!

Pony, if you do move due to work commitments, I hope someone on here buys your place! It's lovely!

We looked at a place in Black, MO and fell in love. Got bid out in a price war though.

I also loved Ava.

Good luck!

A lot of you live in the same area. It's nice to see people are close with a lot of the same ideas. We are south of Mountain grove and west of West Plains, not real far from Norwood. That is where we sell some of our small animals at their small animal auction.
As far as the area, we love it!! People were a little reluctant to really get to know us at first but after about 6 months and us being involved in whatever we could be in the area we have decided it is full of some of the best, most welcoming and sincere folks anywhere.

Had an Old Woman told us that we wouldn't have any trouble around there because we had Family in the area.

Yea I was thinking if the Doctors in Springfield was taking care of me I would be Dead because they are to push people through so fast instead of Doctoring them.I go to Osage Beach but my Doctor is in a Small town.

Springfield isn't Bad I was working there and enjoyed Shopping but every time I was in a Large City I would get involved in things that caused problems in my marriage and could have had other troubles.

Springfield is in Greene county!

Thats the worst news. Springfield itself is great for a large small town. Terrible if you need to do anything that requires zoning. Jobs available on a pretty normal level for this economy. Medical is always hiring, we have several hospitals. We left there in 2006 & moved to Hickory County, north of Bolivar about 1 hour north of Springfield. Will go back when older for health reasons. Enjoy visiting my friends & children there, but won't live there again till i have to. We love Hickory County--no zoning, which can be good, & or bad--
What are you looking for & we can tell you if Springfield has it?

Well, I hold a clinical license in social work; Nick has a degree in electrical/electronic engineering, but prefers to do tech work over the actual engineering stuff. He worked for UL before we moved, blowing things up and all. He liked that gig.

We can pretty much do about anything, but that's our training. We;ve both held jobs doing all sorts of stuff. Where we live now would be great for folks whose income isn't tied to a geographic location, but it's not working for us. Gotta move where the money is.

Trying to get down there again in the next few weeks. Nick has some time off for the holidays, so we may be able to travel then. Of course, I have to get rid of this lousy bronchitis before we get on the road again. Can't remember when I've been this sick...
