Ah, but the "geezer in a caddy" isn't hiding in the tall grass, wood pile, closet or cupboard.

Raeven, unfortunately, you DO have rattlesnakes in western Oregon. They aren't terribly common, but they are there. We had relatives with a farm near Junction City and when we visited when I was young, my brothers and I were warned to stay out of the tall grass because there were rattlesnakes. There aren't *normally* any rattlesnakes on the Coast (which is where we lived at that time), but once in a great while one shows up over there, too. I live on the East side of the mountains now, and even though I know rattlesnakes live here, the only ones I've seen here were dead on the highway. Last summer, though (in 2010), my next-door neighbor saw what she thought was a rattlesnake in her yard while she was mowing the grass.

BlueJuniperFarm... I'm familiar with the Junction City area and yes, I do know of a couple of folks who live out on High Pass Road who have encountered them very rarely. I'm slightly further west of there... it's a little wetter and a little colder, and I have never seen one, not in the tall grass and not on any trails. So far.
But yes, they can certainly turn up, even on a coast. I encountered them with disturbing regularity when I lived on the coast in California, walking along the headland trails in Montana de Oro State Park near Morro Bay. Always kept a sharp eye when I was rambling around there.
I'm glad the only ones you've encountered in Klamath Falls are dead ones on the highway!! Eeeuuugggghhh!!!!

Want to hear the stupid action of one usually more practical? I have no idea what prompted such an action. It just seemed I was compelled to do it.
When Mother & I first arrived on the east coast, we were renting and working a garden. (Mother had parkinsons and I was in the position of caring for her...keeping her out of a nursing home whatever may come. I suspect this mind set and determination played a part in what occurred.)
One morning I was heading to the garden and, as I neared it, I heard a rattle. Well, if you've ever heard the buzz of a rattle snake, I doubt you ever forget it. Thus, I believed what I heard was, indeed, a rattle snake. It did not sound like a young one. I stopped in my tracks and looked around. The rattle subsided. I took another step forward and the rattle started again. I stopped and the rattlling stopped. I took another step...continuing forward of course .... duh!
The rattling started up again. I stopped and the rattling stopped. I took another step...yes I did! As I looked around I saw a "fat" OLD rattler crawl over a log as it left the garden area. It was approximately 3 ft long. I walked on into the garden and did whatever I was going to do; then returned to the house. (I had never been frightened; just curious, which I found curious after the fact.) Now, I suggest no one try such a stupid act! I still have no idea why I did!

I've never been so happy to live in a place with no venomous snakes.

Have never seen a rattler here in Jackson County, Texas. Copperheads, yes. Coral snakes frequently. Rattlers, no.
Knock on wood.

It actually turns out that a rattlesnake bite isn't all that serious. Not like the movies want you to believe. The doctor who treated me said you might die from fright, but the rattle snake won't kill you unless you have health issues or don't get treatment.
It happened in San Diego County. Because there were rattle snakes, I always wore boots, but was headed into town, wearing sandals, and as I got into the car, I saw that the lock on the tack room door hadn't been fastened. So over I trotted to lock the door and a rattlesnake was under the tack room and got me on the foot.
A friend drove me to the hospital, where they made me sit in the waiting room for 3 hours. They certainly didn't think it was serious.
My foot swelled up and I had an allergic reaction to the anti-venom shot. The foot ached for a couple of days and I itched like crazy from the shot.
The snake got his head chopped off for his trouble. Dumb little snake. A 5-6 foot rattler would have kept his mouth shut and I would have never known he was there.
If you know there are rattlers in your area, you watch for them. Wear boots. Look where you are going to put your hands. You should be careful around wood piles anyway because that is where the black widow spiders live.
Seriously, no big deal. If you get bite, stay calm, don't hyperventilate. Drive to the hospital and take the shot. Go home and pay closer attention to where you are putting your hands and feet in the future.
I do remember a young child that died. He had parents who belonged to a church that doesn't believe in medical treatment. So they prayed as their son died. The parents got prosecuted. I don't remember what happened to the parents. The child would have been fine if they'd taken him to the doctor. It took him a long time to die.
