It's been that way for about 5 years or more at the county courthouse here. You have to leave cell phones at the door too. It's not too bad though. My bracelets set it off, but they let me through. I guess I don't look dangerous. Or, maybe it's just that they are happy to have me come to pay the taxes and buy dog tags. The guy at the door here is really old too, and very nice. He's like an ancient Andy Griffith type.

Yup, went to renew/re register my LTCF permit and the screws from my 20 year ago knee surgery set off the metal detector...I'd have been surprised if it hadn't happened so many time flying...
Love the look on the deputy's face when the wand goes crazy at my knee and not my pockets...LOL!
Priceless.

My local courthouse doesn't. There are three surrounding counties who do have armed guards, with metal detectors. I hate with a passion having to access records in those places.

It's all a bloody joke. Denying landmen their pocket knife or leatherman tool... I have to leave my micro leatherman tool on my keychain in the truck when I visit.

I guarantee you that a landman isn't going to go on a killin spree with a pocket knife.

If I had a worse case of 'DGAS' [don't give a s.......], I'd tell the guard, or anyone that cared, how futile their Kuboki theatre is. I'm allowed to carry spiral bound notebooks, with a built in garrote tool. Any number of pens/pencils which can penetrate bodies with ease... Also allow notebooks, sscanners, etc. that could easily hold enough plastic explosive to take down the whole building.... cds/dvds which, if broken can be used like knives... etc etc etc.

You cannot stop someone from doing evil...

In my county, we barely have enough deputies for someone to even be on duty 24/7... much less waste a body on guarding a courthouse...

You dont get screened going into the court house itself but the court rooms do have metal detectors now.

Yes, and it's no joke. Every entrance to every courthouse in the city, as well as the county courthouses all have security. There are a minimum of two deputies, and they spotted my little knife on my keychain and made me take it out of the courthouse (or they would throw it away.)

I had to chuckle when I read this. You must live in a very rural place if all that stuff is handed in one place where you live.

Here, drivers license and vehicle registrations are done by the state at the DMV.

Property tax questions would either be at the tax assessors office, or the tax collectors, both are county offices.

Etc, etc, in one of the many many government offices that would either be federal, state, county or city.

Courthouses are either federal, state , or county. And you won't find any of those in the same building as the other.

EVERYTHING is at the courthouse.
The biggest city I live next to is over 65K.
And in my country the Country seat is where the county courthouse is, but I don't have to go that one to get my drivers license, as I can go into the bigger city at the MVD. And even now being on SS Disability and getting some added State help like I am on now, Medicaid, food stamps etc. I have done everything over the phone, and through the mail, still never have needed to go to the country courthouse.
And of course for years I also lived in Tempe, AZ. Part of the Phoenix metro area.
Even where I went to HS, the city is over 70K.
But my home town is 600+, so no services are here, that is why I go the larger city to get things done if needed. Where those services are separated into separate buildings.

At ours, cell phones are considered dangerous and not allowed in the building.

Yes, we have the guards and metal detectors at the court house, but some of us pitched a fit when they also had them next door at the administrative services building (where you pay your taxes). We asked why it was necessary to have armed guards and metal detectors just to get through and pay your taxes and get your tags. They moved the equipment and there are no guards there now.

Yes, our courthouse has a metal detector and at least one guard watching it. There used to be two entrances to get in to the courthouse, but one of them is kept locked at all times now. With only one entrance, as soon as you enter, the metal detector and guards are there.

And even though we live in a small sleepy little community - I can see the need for it. You figure that inside the courthouse are all the different departments - tax claim bureau, tax assessment office, etc. It only takes one disgruntled kooky person to come in and start shooting.

Then you have the court cases and divorce cases, and child hearing cases. It only takes one disgruntled person to "lose it" and decide to bring in a gun or weapon and take it out on the person of their desire.

It's sad that it has come to this point, but there have already been so many cases over the years.

No screening, no security. And you can walk right in and talk to the judge without an appointment.

No screen doors on our Courthouse, just wood and glass. Federal court 150 Miles W has cameras and you cannot park on the street around it or linger on the sidewalk. State Court has detectors, County has metal detectors for the Courtroom, none for JP courtroom.

Yep, ours has done this for years, I hate emptying my pockets every time I go in there. But I do understand why they do it, so It is no big problem. > Marc

Our county courthouse is in the state house building. They've had cops on guard and metal detectors at least 10 years.

Same here. I don't think our little town could afford screening equipment. Besides, the police department is at the other end of the county building.

When I went to court on a traffic ticket, I watched as two different couples with babies in carriers were allowed to hand the carrier around the metal detector to the guard, while they themselves were screened. I thought what a farce it was, since any criminal seeing that would just have to bring a baby in a carrier next time and any weapon they wanted stashed under the baby! Didn't take a brain surgeon to see it wasn't a good system, although I'm glad they do SOMETHING to weed out the weapons.

Our county doesn't screen at all. It's pretty relaxed and there's hardly ever anyone in there. The next county over has a much bigger population and they screen pretty tightly.
