I guess I am fortunate that all of the folks who have been to our property are much more interested in our orchard, pigs, chickens, rabbits, cats, dog, our garden, DH's shop, and visiting. Very few ever even come inside our home. Those who have? Hardly any have ever asked to use the bathroom (spare one in our hall...). There are zero prescriptions, simply vitamins, Tylenol, and Aspirin. I am also very accurate at analyzing people, so very few get a "pass" to come here or enter our home Would I ever snoop at someone's home? Absolutely not, how incredibly rude!

I'm a woman and as a guest I would not snoop. But if we were having guests over, I'd clean up everything just in case.

Female here and it has never crossed my mind to snoop around someone's personal areas when visiting their homes. Who does these types of things?

Guy, no way looking at personal areas, but will look at furniture and pictures that are out if invited into that room.

Isn't the OP in their former screen name - the one that "supposedly" wanted to teach their home schooled kids the difference between snitching and stealing, from their neighbors?? Sending their kids across the absentee land owner's property lines, in order to get plants and such for free?

When is "snitching" not "stealing"?

Male here, and I don't even go onto other's property without permission! Let alone snooping around inside or out!

I am so glad, that the OP that likes to question other persons morals lives on the other side of the country.
That is less person(s) that I have to guard against trespassing or snooping around, while this Marine Corps Veteran is armed with at least a 'bayonet tipped rifle'....
Well those thousands of hours of standing 'guard duty' in uniform with a Military Security Clearance in a "Restricted Area", had taught me to be ever vigilant against those 'shifty types'.

No way, I still feel guilty looking for air freshener at my Uncle's house. I looked in several of the bathroom cupboards before finding it out of sight on the toilet tank cover behind a decorative covered roll of TP. Did not find anything that was strange or out of place in that bathroom, didn't expect to either, just embarrassed to be 'snooping'.

Wow Radiofish! I made the mistake of reading your link although I did quit at page three. The justification of some for stealing and trespassing was amazing and quite eye-opening. I guess it is good to know what some consider as acceptable behavior.

Well that link I had posted - is to another one of these many "What would you do?" questions, that the OP started under their previous screen name...

At least it lets me know of many whom I would never turn my back to, or invite out to the hilltop up here.

Ha! The marbles idea is great! How embarrassing would THAT be? I don't typically look in people's stuff. There has been an occasion in which I used the last of someone's tp and I looked under the sink for a replacement, but that's it. I do have to admit I always look behind the shower curtain to make sure its empty before going, and only because I have been the person behind the curtain on one occasion in my teenage life.

My MIL was like that, too. At one point after we had just purchased our first house I caught her digging through my top dresser drawer. Being the kind of guy that I am, I quickly moved into the room and slammed the drawer shut, nearly catching her hand in the drawer. I led her out into our living room where my wife was sitting and proceeded to read MIL "the riot act" in front of her daughter. It led to some uneasy feelings for a few weeks but PROBLEM SOLVED.

In answer to OP's question . . . I would never touch anything in someones home unless requested to do so. I don't like sneaks and thieves and I deal with them immediately.

Good morning and thanks for the replies! The question of snooping came up yesterday when we were cleaning up for guests who were coming to dinner. I said I did not want them to use our boys' hall bathroom because I did not have time to clean inside the shower and since these were friends who were here for the first time, I did not want them to see a dirty shower.

My husband said no one would ever snoop and look inside the shower to see if the shower stall was clean or not. I said I was worried that some folks might - so we had the friends use our bathroom.

Just for fun we decided to ask here and see how many people would snoop!

Its good to know that the next time, we can just let people use the hall bathroom and the boys' shower stall will not be examined. Thanks everyone!

Later:
Wow - I had not thought about the Blueberries for quite a long time. For those who are curious:
-Nel Frattempo is Italian for "Meanwhile".
-No one from this house ever took any of the blueberry plants from the neighbor's land.
-Neighbors did continue to take the little "suckers" or "shoots" and some of those plants live today. The adult plants are still there but doing poorly. Since our boys are older and sometimes away at College, they stopped taking care of the plants (the ones on the other land) years ago.
-We successfully grew four blueberry plants from the seeds from our own blueberry plants (which are from the same batch as the plants in question back in 2007) but those plants are still too small to bear fruit but probably will next season. And the boys successfully rooted three more plants from shoots of their own plants. Those also are still too small to fruit but one day will.

Thanks for the input and have a good rest of the weekend.

I have some friends who are the nicest people that you'd ever want to meet. But the wife admitted to me one time that she does snoop inside other people's bathroom cabinets when she's a guest in their home. I was a bit shocked to say the least!

I will admit to snooping one time....but with good reason. After I'd sat down to do my business, I discovered that the toilet paper holder held no TP. So I did open the cupboard nearest me, which thankfully had TP in it! Lesson learned, always check first before having a seat! Then you can ask the host/hostess for TP if it's empty

No. I'll do the TP scan without any qualms, though. I don't consider that snooping. I read Ann Landers when I was a kid, and the marbles solution is probably the only bit of her advice that I specifically remember. She probably recommended following it up with 30 lashes with a wet noodle.

Nope! Wouldn't snoop. No way!

But I also don't keep medicines in the medicine cabinet either. When the kids were little I got into the habit of locking medications up. Then, years later, when I sold insurance, we would visit clients in their homes. I heard a rumor that one of my co-workers was supporting his drug habit by asking clients if he could use their bathroom, and stealing any narcotics he found. I was horrified, but had no way of knowing if it was true. So medications are kept out of the bedroom. I have put keyed locks on the master bedroom at both the house in the burbs and the ranch. It may seem tacky, but if we are expecting company that we don't really know well, I lock my purse and other valuables in the bedroom.

Before any of you decide to resort to the "marbles" thing, remember that they will bounch all over your tub, sink and tile - chipping and cracking as they go!

if I'm eating there a general Observance of things, not to much different then going to a restaurant. though you never get a chance to really check the kitchen out in a restaurant.

But other then the obviously noticeable, nope no snooping. if its in a drawer or hidden from sight its not my business.
