I've had cougar attacks all around my place, but not actually on my place. It's lousy with them here.

One friend lost a llama cria about 3 years ago; another neighbor lost a goat. Tough outcome on that one... they left the goat carcass out, knowing the cougar would return for it, then killed the cougar when it did in fact return. It was a big cat -- 215 pounds. The mistake the neighbor made was reporting the incident. The Forest Service had the neighbor arrested for "trapping" the cat (leaving the carcass out).

Lesson learned. (SSS)

Another neighbor shared that she had left a large pot full of chicken broth out on her back porch to cool. Came out to investigate what the dogs were ruckusing about and found a cougar enjoying her soup! Me, I wouldn't have expected anything else.

I keep 2 llama geldings to look after my goats... and though it's not unheard of for a cougar to take on a llama, they generally don't. All I know is, I haven't lost any livestock -- or cats, dogs and/or chickens. At least not in seven years. My place is heavily wooded 35 acres and backs up on to mature commercial forestry land on 3 sides... I know they're there.

I think anywhere there is easy prey and cover, you will find cougar. Keep track of your beloved pets -- or make sure they're smart and lucky!
