Keep the trash and weeds out of the yard will help a lot. I think getting a winter start would help too. Finally, it takes several hours for a tick to really dig in, so daily showers and a "tick-check" helps.

Yeah, its Ozark Woodland down there, but there is also a lot of clearings. Kind of a thin topsoil over limestoney rocks, as well as chert, flint, that kind of stuff. Rolling and hilly.
Dont worry about those politics, its a rural area, there aint a whole lot of politicin going on out in the sticks. Lots of conservatives, Bible-belt types. Pickup trucks and poor people. Small time ranchers, woodworkers, sawyers, truck drivers. A real 'live and let live attitude'.Also there are usually low taxes and affordable land. Good water generally and
very productive pastureland, in spots. Lots of timber. Lots and lots of timber.
Hot and humid in the summer, spring is beautiful, moderately cold in the winter, not too much different from parts of Tennessee. Fall is my favorite time, with the cool nights and bright sunny days, that finally give way to the grey of winter....
All in all, if you like Tennessee, you'll probably like Missouri.
Although if I were looking for land in MO, I am partial to the area about 50 miles east / northeast of there, around Arcadia. On the eastern side of the Taum Sauk Mountain, the granite base of the Ozarks... REALLY nice country around there. The early French settlers called it Arcadia for a reason... that means Paradise in french, so I am told.

Once you get an area clear, and keep the grass and brush reasonably under control, you wont have much problems with ticks. Probably no worse than anywhere else in the Eastern Woodlands of the United States.

The land I'm talking about is pretty affordable, Cheap pmts. Lots to think about with a full cabinet shop. Selling it would wrong thing to do as you can't get your money out of it.
Far as politics goes you won't believe it but I absolutely hate it. I was raised on handshakes and hard work. I go to town once a month and in between I probably don't talk to three people if that.
Wasn't till I was about 45 after Jimmy Carter that I cold see the writing on the wall. If it wasn't for kids and grandkids they could stuff it. I don't need them
If you know any land sales up around Arcadia let me know. I ain't set on nothing yet.

TN, if you buy that place in Missouri here is a little tip for you for keeping away the ticks. In my research about it I learned from a study that was done at Guelph University in Ontario that there is something in the oils of rose geranium that is a highly effective repellant against ticks (and 97% effective against mosquitoes, 60% more effective than citronella!). So if you get that place, plant hundreds of rose geraniums everywhere around your dwelling and property.

IN ten years here I never had a tick till this year and it was those ones the size of a pepper flake. I didn't even realize what they were at first. Never seen one that fall. That was in the spring and the spot still itches occasionally.
I do shower everyday sometimes twice. SE Asia taught me that even it its in salt water LOL. Finding them little pepper ticks bugs me no pun intended. The bigger ones I can handle. NOt that I want to

Can use granules to kill the ticks. Our freezes are not as cold as they used to be. As a result have at time seen a few in the winter. The soil is thin and rocky, but Eminence has much fewer people than most counties in MO. It is a good place to relatively "disappear into the woods". If you are retired should be fine. Just not many good jobs there.

Had a place 20 minutes from Arcadia about 8 years ago.....to many trespassers and thieves. Maybe too close to St. Louis had something to do with it but it seemed nobody respected your property...nice visit for recreation though. Lived near Eminence about four years ago, nice town for necessities, quiet and friendly, most mind their own business...politics are a non-issue.....can still do business on a handshake, can get a bit crowded in the summer months/weekends. Rugged beautiful country with a lot of large springs, Jacks Fork and Current River, excellent canoeing and fishing....hunting on 1/4 million acres of public land that gets little pressure.
Ticks are gone in December and start showing up in January...ha-ha...I live farther south of there but it is a quiet place to live in the outskirts of Shannon County.

Great post...and yeah, I kinda wondered that about Arcadia, Taum Sauk area. Beautiful land though.
Our family has had a little place down near Bonne Terre since the early 70's, a couple acre lots down at Lake Timberline, or the Redneck Riviera as I call it. About an hour south of St. Louis. I think there are 7000 lots? And about 10 good sized lakes, beaches, miles and miles of lane roads. But basically, you're still in the woods. Its a weekend getaway for some, and others live there year-round. Lots are cheap, and its a pretty laid-back atmosphere. Lots of good people, but over the past 5 years theres been an upswing in criminal activity there also...stealing. The busted a few people, but there are still some reports..
Anyway, there are always lots available , if someone was looking for a semi-rural semi-private community to live in, for cheap.

Forget about the ticks, why has no one mentioned CHIGGERS? The first time you get bit up by chiggers, you're going to be wishing they were ticks instead!
