Well, it'll help, but don't expect it to solve all of it! Some folks have no respect for fences and will climb over them, cut them, knock them down, etc. to do as they please.

This summer we had some guys climbing our fence (which they broke) to fish in our pond. Hubby had a chat with them and they left.

Came back about two weeks later so I went out to have a chat with them. I was MAD and took our pitbull mix with me. They told me hubby said they could fish there when he wasn't home.

Told them I knew they were lying and to get off my property before I called the cops. Told them next time I wouldn't bother coming over to ask them to leave, I'd just call the cops.

They stayed away for a few weeks and came back AGAIN. This time hubby went out there and told them the cops HAD been called and if they EVER came back he wasn't calling the cops...he would shoot.

They ain't been back.

Fences only deter honest folks.

Fences aren't castle walls, but they do raise the level of dishonesty/disrespect required to one that can't be explained away with an "aw, shucks." Lines like "Sorry, I didn't realize I had drifted that far from my own house" or "Sorry, the truck was acting up and I needed to pull over right away and there were these fruit trees right there" suddenly turn into "Sorry, I climbed/cut the fence and am guilty of criminal trespass."

Fences remind folks that there are safer fishing holes, easier fruit trees and more reasonable shortcuts.

I sometimes 'enjoy' trespassers... especially when they get stuck trespassing. I've gotten some bad sections of road completely repaired, when errant tanker trucks miss the obvious turn off... last time it happened, they had to get a dozer to pull the tanker out... when they got turned around, I wouldn't let em out.... they had to get their yard manager out... told him as soon as gravel trucks and a grader made it out and started 'fixing' my road, they could leave. $5K later, they left... my road was rotten before, it's mostly great now... and the tanker company made double dog sure their hands never drove back thissaway again.

Anytime I catch a parked vehicle that I don't know... I let the air out of the tires, and call the sheriff... If they have a mighty good reason, their tires get aired up, otherwise, they get towed...

How long does it take to let the air out of a tire without pulling the valve stem out? IDK if I would want a strangers car lingering.

Make the calls and also send them a certified letter to desist, keeping copies & dated receipt, in case you run into hassles getting the stuff moved away. Any clean-up will cost something, and you should not be responsible. Also, suppose some kids/teens/vagrants happen on the site and hurt themselves or make things worse? Your problem?? In the city, we called that chutzpah. Sue

I'm glad to hear that you didn't escalate this into a war.

It's a lot easier to start a fight than to stop one. That's not saying a person should ever let someone abuse them but it's not always smart to immediately assume the worst especially when there are so many possible explanations.
