Please visit this website. It is for a national nonprofit housing organization that certifies other nonprofits to operate foreclosure assistance. There is no charge for any of their services and they will refer you to a local organization to help you with the modification process. They are completely reputable and are just there to help people. My agency works hand in hand with our local affiliated organization so I do know them to be a good provider of information and assistance in navigating the paperwork.

Read and understand everything in the new mortgage-to-be. Sometimes there is a deal breaker like extra large payments being required in a few years time.

+1! This is critically important. I did neglect to mention both the folks I personally know who got Mtg Modifications for 50% OFF their prior mtg? 30 YR FIXED mortgages! It is very unfortunate there are banks approving short term mods, as that is like a bandaide on a bleeding artery

Just call your mortgage company. Tell them your situation. They might make a loan modification offer if they are convinced that you are capable of making reduced payments.
