Hi, good luck and make it work. Im in N.E Ohio. Around here, P.M. me and I can explain better, it's more a matter of being getto rather than black. Things are pretty good for anyone willing to be decent. Will you be loved by all, no way, but who is. The vast majority of folks will be good folks. Yep, 2011 and some are stuck on stupid, but many more (at least around here) realize that there are many more issues that are much more important to look at.

Stay away from north-central Michigan, though! (Except for maybe the liberal enclaves like Traverse City.). I personally knew a mixed-race family (black guy, white woman) who moved to Farwell from the Detroit area and were burned out of their home TWICE! The real shame of it was he was a disabled Gulf War veteran. Nice folks, too ... I met them when I was writing about a homeschooling group of which they were a part.

Lake County, MI, is rural and has a fairly large black community, although it's not ideal for homesteading (poor soil ... very sandy) and jobs are hard to come by there.

Anyone that doesn't think racism is not alive and well in small town America has their head buried in the sand. My daughters are half asian, I have had some real screaming matches with the local ignorant racists, some that were so stupid they couldn't spell the N word if they had to. The school system here couldn't handle that a little asian girl was so far ahead of their most intelligent little white boy, they actually made him a Co-Valedictorian than let my daughter have the honor to herself although she was clearly a full point ahead of him in the GPA standings. She was not allowed to attend some FBLA funtions although her GPA was way better than any of the girls that did attend, GPA was to be the determining factor on who would attend. The Spanish teacher at the school(Hispanic) actually told her she was not selected for FBLA camp because she was not from one of the "white" families in town. Sorry for my rant, but, no other subject sets my blood on fire like racism.

Hate is out there, in many ways. Not to jack the thread , but maybe we should keep on the question and not add to the the drama. Hope that im not coming across wrong as many have been hurt enough already. lets help eachother out by staying tworads the positive and and helping out by answering the question. I t has been great to see the honesty an responses so far.

Racism does still exist. However, it should only be a determining factor in extreme situations.

One thing that no one has addressed is that there can be a (slightly) different perception of white families who adopt black children vs. a fully black or biracial one. The adopting white family actually grants entry into the community for the black children, especially if they already were in the community. The neighbors already know the parents and assume that the parents will respect the social values of the community. When a fully black family comes into a predominantly white community, they usually enter as strangers and some people mistrust strangers.

I think that the suggestion that the OP try to test drive the community a bit is a good one. I sent the original poster a PM and I hope that she responds again, either in this thread or to my PM.

There is still fear around. Ignorant people abound. Where I live a black couple would show up for church once in a while. Have no idea why they weren't regular. They never seemed to have any problems. I live in a small community with few blacks. Used to have a cottone gin here, so there must have been quite a few blacks in that day.

When I lived in the city we had a good number of blacks in our rather large church.

I had a black supervisor who ask me why I didn't sell out and move to the black neighorhood. I had been through it and didn't like the aatmosphere. Why live where all the store windows have bars on them and most yards have pott bulls. Just not inviting. My part of town was very open with only asians having bars on their stores. Must bea cultural thing. Noticed the same thing about the mexican hoods. Looked like Mexico. High bar fenced yards.

I live in the sticks and very few blacks. In the nearest large town blacks are in white churches with no problems. I pretty much agree that all one has to do is mind their business and be reasonable and show no tude to get along. But rual commounites are tuff even er us whities. Country folks repulse most anyone who has lived there all their life. So if you need income live close enough to work in town and probably the city.

yep, What he says. I drove 35 miles one way, 70 a day, 5 or 6 days a week. Gets to be hard on the gas bill, on the car, and on the repairs.
O And another thing I might menti9on. If you DO come out to the country, DONT bring a Caddie with you. NOBODY in the country owns one. That will set you apart as much as flying the stars and bars up where I came from. NE Kans. Sell the Caddie, and get a good vihicle that is GREAT on gas milage. Also, Get yourself a pk. Youll need it sooner than later.

YH, Geo made a good point. Even in Canada and Britain Fox is recognized as a media source that is classist, racist, xenophobic and mis-informational. If a certain type of people only tune in to Fox as their main source of news and no other media then one must conclude that they endorse what Fox is promoting.

interesting... I have watched fox numerous times, and have never seen anything remotely racist in nature being promoted. While I will agree that their programming is of a "conservative slant", I have yet to see anything on it that I could call misrepresentative or racist in nature. What I have observed however is the self proclaimed "mainstream" news outfits making those accusations about Fox, (and about the tea party grrrrr)... but without supporting evidence. Having differing political viewpoints does not make one racist nor does it make them liars.

It is this very type of stereotyping that in my opinion creates mistrust and promotes prejudices among our nations many good citizens.

Sorry bout that, I dont keep a "program" handy while posting here. I seldom look at, much less recognize, the names of the individual posters... and just reply to the content of the post. I do seem to recall that NL has made some comments regarding her neighbors to the south though. I also seem to recall some of her opinions were of a more "liberal" slant compared to mine too.

I hate ta inform ya, but I donate plasma, and many blacks asa well as whites do also in Tulsa. I happen to talk to more blacks than whites. I KNOW FOR A FACT that many blacks have a fixaction with the Caddies. One guy ther has 8. Another has 4, but now has a new big pk and dont drive the caddies anymore. Dont know if he still has them now or not. Maybe, its a form of validation. If ya get to where you can afford a caddie, youve made it in the hood. DONT tHINKY that whites dont have their own validation symbols LOL
