I refused to answer the census in 2000, despite repeated attempts by sending people to my door, etc.
I haven't been arrested yet. Just hang up on them without saying a word and tell the people at your door that you aren't answering. Worked for me.

I 'know' my census worker personally......she is also my
rural postal delivery person. Known her for a good number of years when we lived closer in town and she was our neighbor kitty-corner across the back fence.
When she showed up at the door last year to take the census in person (as we'd received the package
IN THE MAIL and refused to fill it out), I told her, you know us, you know how many people live here
and most of our personal habits, etc. so you have the basic info......fill in the rest of the blanks yourself.....
I'm not doing it. That stuff that they are asking is NOT required by law and I refuse to provide it. Hopefully,
you realize that it's nothing personal and that we can still be friends. So now what are you going to do???
She told me that she understood and that she was just doing her job and that there would be no
problems from her end. So far, she still delivers my mail and I haven't received anything else from the Census bureau.

That was my first thought. It's all over and done with. I suspect commercial data mining.

copperkid, then she did know enough about you to fill it out. I worked for the census and if it wasn't filled out with enough information, someone came back around. They also took a variety of forms at random and sent someone to double check the information already entered. A lot of people got aggravated and I don't blame them at all, but with work what it's been, it was a paycheck and I had to have one.
The regular census _is_ over, this is something new the governement has decided needs doing, however, since they put it under census, the census laws apply. BTW, yes, there is a law that you are required to provide certain information to the census taker. Our tax dollars at work, don't you know?

Not legal. Plain and simple.

We got the big form last year, like 30 plus pages including financial questions family questions etc. Way too much info. Said on the cover 'your response required by law." I chucked it. 4 wks later got the same packet with the same threat. Chucked it. Got about 5 or 6 phone calls and one visit, refused to comply each time, patiently explaining that it was too invasive and wanted info that I felt was personal and none of their business. Of course they use the excuse that it's for road planning, school, districting, county financial stats etc. I say if theres something wrong with the way our area is being run, we the people of this area will fix it, we don't expect or desire the federal government to control how our county is run based upon their census statistics.
Finally the lady who was assigned our area called me and said, I was the last person on our road that she needed to finish so she could be done with her assignment, she doesn't care what I do or don't fill out, just tell her what I'm willing to say so she can finish. I said 3 people live here. She said that's all you want to say, I reply that's all I think the census bureau needs to know to count citizens according to the original intent of the census when the US was first established. She said OK thanks.
No jail time, no arguments, no fines, just good ole citizen noncompliance. Make your position known and stick by it, they are not going to make a scene if you keep your head. I doubt 1 in 1000 of these cases gets prosecuted, though in a few decades when people are more accustomed (trained) to being bossed around by big govt I imagine resistance to their foolishness will not be tolerated.

That is the same thing happened here. They sent the long form twice and then all these calls. I have filled it out and mailed it and I have talked to two people on the phone......so I guess they will just keep calling......it is upsetting and annoying.....
Thanks everyone for the input.
And HarryChickpea: Thank you for the funny!

This is in regard to the actual census which in which your only required answer is the number of people living at the address.
All we answered in the census was the number of people living here. No other info.
I will not answer that American Community Survey. They could toss me in jail and I still wouldn't answer those questions.

According to the article that was posted it states:
. To date, no person has ever been charged with a crime for refusing to answer the ACS survey, which several U.S. Representatives have challenged as unauthorized by the census act and violative of the Right to Financial Privacy Act. The Department of Commerce states that it is "not an enforcement agency."[1]
Now to me it reads that this is a violation of my rights? I won't answer if they ask. Why don't they ask our congress these questions! Oh yeah, I forgot. They can lie through their teeth better than anyone.

But this doesn't sound like the US census at all. Besides that was taken a while ago.

I always tell them If you are treating me with the law get a court order and come back with the sheriff and I will answer all the questions even if "I do not know" is the answer.
