I've got more logs than I know what to do with (drought's killin trees right and left), and instead of making hasty decisions on dimensional lumber, I've got to where I'm making cants, 12x12 to my max length of 17'8". In two months, the checking is stopping on the pine logs. The oak beams seem to have stopped too, after 3 months.

If I were buying from someone else, I'd stack em up off the ground, and use em as soon as possible, esp. if making a post and beam house... get the frame up, put a roof on it, and let it dry a couple extra months, and then start filling in the 'holes'.

Depending on location, some of the green stuff will dry out quickly... it's over a hundred degrees here, and relatively low humidity this summer, and all the fresh cut wood is drying fast!

Texican,

Never dealt with cants and green boards in a very low humidity, but I have had a lot of success stoping checking from the ends during drying by putting on a coat of polyurathnae on the end grain.
