-There are a few dry towns around where I live, but not any counties as far as I know. Doesn't bother me much as I don't drink anyhow.

Yep, lotsa folks dont seem to understand that ya dont have to drink to hang out at the pub. My dads uncle used to drop his wife off at church, and mosey on down to the local pub every saturday. He would spend the day playing dominoes with his buds, while she was praying for everyones souls. Neither of them ever drank a drop of alcohol in their lives but unk would buy a round for the boys every now and then if he was winning at the domino game.

There are lotsa dry (well, they are supposed to be dry) counties in this country.. Kentucky and Tennessee are both mostly dry counties. I dunno if its still true, but when I first moved to Ky every drop of "legal" bourbon made in our fair state was distilled in dry counties! I live in a dry county, that is surrounded by dry counties.. with one exception. The county just to our west went "moist" a while back. Moist is better than dry, at least you can get a drink with a meal.. if the restaurants food sales are 85 percent of their business. Still no bars, or liquor stores though but its a good sign that people are beginning to use their heads a little bit.

Yep.. there are still dry counties in NC as well. You ahve to cross the county line to grab a beer or a nice bottle of wine.

As for the meeting places.. I second the library during school hours. Also, the librarian will know if there are homeschool groups in your area.
There was one here that was uber-religious, very conservative and I could not join as I would not/could not sign their pledge or discuss in great detail the Grand Canyon being formed when the Great Flood drained. (to where??)

But then I found a nice secular homeschool group. Some are religious, just not conservative. It has been great! We meet once a week and the kids hang and we do field trips together.

The Farmer's Market has been another place to meet like minded folks too.

Lady friend said she met a bunch of guys at a coin laundromat. If they were by themselves, washing/drying only men's clothing, chances are about 99% they were single.

All these ideas are great... If you have a car... I don't and all my high school and theatre friends have gone on to college (yeah I was the one to get pregnant and get married right out of high school) so lonely Lisa strikes nearly every day. Anyone know how to make friends with having no way to get anywhere? If u do then u would be a genius.

4H. Go to every community function possible. The little town nearby (I don't know if there are 100 people there) has an annual picnic.

Invite your neighbors for a cook-out.

Start a gardening group, sewing group, ladies craft group or children's play group at your place. Hang a couple flyers at the grocery store, feed mill etc. You'll meet a few nice ladies that even have something in common with you.

Ladies, La Leche League or start a babysitting co-op. Audobon Society. I met a bunch of like minded people at Florida Trail Association. Almost every state has a hiking trail group. The nice thing is those, plus reenactors groups, uusually meet at night and are a great couple's activity. We met nice people at the local Rare Fruit Club- but since they met Friday nights it went away after the children reached an age where we had lots of Boy Scout camping trips, or FTA activities.
