This is old, the horses were all adopted out months ago.

Randy Rooster 08/02/11 09:18 AM

I didnt know- just showed up on my local cl today - thanks - glad to hear it worked out ok

HilltopDaisy 08/02/11 10:52 AM

Yeah, weird, because it was on our cl a few days ago, too.

I think some of these threads get re-activated when they are posted somewhere and not dated. Someone that has not read it before sees it, doesn't realize it is an old post, re-posts in FB or on a BB somewhere and it makes all of the rounds again. This is one reason I always do look for a date ...

Common Tator 08/02/11 11:16 AM

Anyone interested could call the number t see if it is real.

olsonla 08/02/11 11:20 AM

yes this is old, Check out Snopes.com- the Phone # has a recording that states all horses have found homes.

uncle Will in In. 08/02/11 02:26 PM

And don't forget the old saying. Never look a gift horse in the mouth.

Silvercreek Farmer 08/02/11 02:31 PM

Maybe not the case in this ad, but the scammers are getting smarter, copying and using actual ads for their scams so the grammar and pics are a little better...

nathan104 08/02/11 02:32 PM

I see tons of free donkeys, mule and horses on CL here all the time. Makes you wonder if ground donkey would make good burgers...

foxtrapper 08/02/11 02:37 PM

Horse meat is fine eating. No reason to think donkey wouldn't be.

Ken Scharabok 08/02/11 02:37 PM

As far as I know there is only one horse slaughter house left in the U.S. and they sell exclusively to zoos and such.

Think about it though, who would give a thoroughbred away.

Within the past year I think about a half-dozen people have offered me horses, seeing as I have so much pasture and all. Neighbor got two Appoluska (sp?) free for the hauling. Mare and her geldling.

Lots of broken down old thoroughbreds around. Free ones pop up all the time.

bja105 08/02/11 06:33 PM

I know back in college, we would prank our friends by posting signs for football tickets available, with our friend's phone number.

I've been threatening to butcher a horse or two lately. When butchering pigs with the Amish neighbor, I asked if he'd help cut up the thoroughbred/beaver that ate my wood fence. He said he wouldn't eat it, it would taste like treated 2x6.

oregon woodsmok 08/02/11 06:33 PM

There are free horses every week on the local Craigslist. Mostly old, or unsound, or not trained.

I tried to talk my son into butchering one, but he vetoed the idea.

Good saddle horses can be had for a couple hundred dollars and saddles that I know cost $2500 or more are being offered for $300 or even less.

It's hard to keep a horse if you've lost your job and feed costs and horse shoes keep going up and up.

Ken Scharabok 08/02/11 07:15 PM

My father told me at one time horse meat was a staple at butcher shops. Apparently still popular in places in Europe.

I read a lot of western novels. Apparently the Western Native American Indians preferred buffalo to beef and mule to horses. These tribes first saw horses due to Spanish exploration of the American West. They thought they were dogs wearing turtles on their feet and were amazed when the riders got off of them and then started to take off their outer skin. They first thought they were part of the horse itself.

Given the opportunity I'd at least taste horse meat.

Unregistered 1427921752 08/03/11 12:15 AM

My BIL married a gal from Iceland . From what she says eating horse meat is common there .

uncle Will in In. 08/03/11 05:33 AM

They have a horse auction every Friday in northern Indiana. Most of the horses are shipped to Canada for slaughter.

Ken Scharabok 08/03/11 08:37 AM

To get rid of an old horse find out who is the president of the local PETA group. At midnight tie horse(s) in the yard at the front of their hourse.

Now this really works for me. Like the way you think! :goodjob:

brody 08/03/11 10:35 AM

gah this is hitting facebook again now - expect to see lots of it this round too

Freeholder 08/03/11 01:46 PM

I've thought about getting one of the many free horses offered here and butchering it, too, but don't really want to tackle that much meat by myself. If I could find someone else willing to help in return for part of the meat, I'd do it.

Oldcountryboy 08/03/11 02:34 PM

Aurrrch, Accctt, arch! Horse meat too stringy!

Go to a Oklahoma or Texas livestock auction. You should be able to get beef real cheap right about now. No grass or hay to feed, so many livestock owners are selling out and taking whatever they can get out of their livestock.

Michael W. Smith 08/03/11 04:58 PM

A "free" horse simply means someone is tired of putting more and more money into a money pit - and they want to cut their losses!
Many horses are fed all kinds of medicines - for worms and such - so using it for meat would be a "do at your own risk".
I'd also be worried about neighbors hearing about your new meat and turning you in for cruelty to animals.

The slaughter plants in the U.S. are closed. It is legal to ship the horses to Canada, where slaughter plants are open.

nobrabbit 08/03/11 07:06 PM

It's all over CL AGAIN here in KY. Seems like it comes around once a month or so.

And also to feed the big cats etc. at Zoos, and pet food industry. It was just Slaughter plants for horses for Human Consumption that were closed.

Elsbet 08/03/11 09:24 PM

I love horses, I don't think I could personally ever bring myself to eat a horse. but why was there a law passed against slaughtering them for human consumption in the US? If someone likes horsemeat... It's not like they are an endangered species. Sadly, with some of the horses I've seen in the past, it might be the most humane thing, when people can't/won't take care of them anymore, rather than let them starve on bad pasture without vet care. :(

I love horses too. I have three and two mules. I'm not sure why the closing happened, just assumed it was unrelenting pressure from PETA types.
The horrible outcome of the closings has been that equine are shipped to Mexico and Canada which consists of longer rides packed in livestock trailers not meant to haul horses. Those who pushed for US slaughter house closings should have to spend a little time unloading those horses after a 2000 mile trip.

Hi, Elsbet.

Hope on over to the horse forum and search the word 'slaughter'. We've discussed it over there multiple times. Those threads should be able to answer your questions. :)

TRAILRIDER 08/04/11 12:45 PM

There are loads of free or nearly free horses in Kentucky. there are just too many horses being bred....especially TB horses. I was in the TB business for many years. You figure x number are foaled and registered each year, of that how many get to the track? A small percentage of those stay sound enough to race at all. A smaller percentage of those ever do any good.
I hate the idea of slaughtering horses, but if you breed so many its just a neccessary evil. I have dairy goats, and if I keep breeding them, I've got to slaughter some. Sad but true.

I agree! We've even had horses stolen in this area & they were tracked to Mexico to a slaughter house. I guess since they were trained Foxtrotters, they figured they would be easier to get into the trailers, they were right! The owners were heartbroke!

This was a very old post.

Forcast 06/02/15 05:12 PM

best horses I ever got came from a dead man who's son wanted nothing more then for them to be gone. Had one that was from the Army Cav. He did all kinds of tricks and was a big hit in the Belton Texas parades. So some times it works out and some times it dont

dizzy 06/02/15 09:03 PM

My first horse was free. The owner had died and the family just wanted to find a good home for her. She was a great horse. I had her for just over 2 years, then lost her to colic caused by a tumor in her small intestines.

Lol. In this area, with it's endless churn of horses off the tracks? It's 7:30. If I left now, I could have a 53 foot trailer full of them by lunchtime.
