vacation to canada

We live in MI and would like to take a camping trip to Canada.

Can anyone make suggestions of "can't miss" things to see.

MattyD 07/27/11 09:48 PM

-If you don't mind the drive, I'd say head to Nova Scotia. Peggy's Cove, Bay of Fundy, etc... are awesome sights to see!

Matt

Depends how far you wanna go and what you're looking for. It's kinda roomy.

Niagara Falls is one to see sometime, I prefer the Canadian side, then you get the whole Clifton Hill experience as well.

Algonquin Park is good.

Manitoulin Island.

Thousand Islands area.

If you have kids Science North and Dynamic Earth in Sudbury are great.

If you are looking for good camping and scenic wilderness, I would go up Interstate 75 and cross at Sault Ste Marie and travel west around Lake Superior to Thunder Bay, then on to International Falls and back into Minnesota. I don't know if there are any big "attractions" but it is beautiful country.

If you are looking for less wilderness, cross at Detroit, go to Niagra Falls then head north to Sudbury. You can then loop through Espinola to Manitoulin Island and take the Tobermory ferry across the lake, heading through Owen Sound and through a real pretty combination of farm and cottage country back towards Michigan.

I love that first (around Lake superior) trip. It's filled with lovely camp sites, and Thunderbay is a wonderful place to learn about the history of trapping and trading and the native tribes.

Then down into Minnesota where there are 3 fantastic state parks along the lake...follow the lake around and up through Michigan and on to the Apostle Islands. Great place to camp, rent kayaks or canoes...ahhh...the memories. (bring bug spray tho. )

If you prefer East...Following along the Lakes is a great way to go there, too. Lots of history..and the Erie Canal, Niagra, more Trading Posts and Forts to visit.

A lot depends on 1)how long you're going to be gone; 2)what you and family are most interested in; 3)ages of kids, if any. (like...do you need a stop at a water park or something similar); and 4)what time of year are you going?

We're going to PEI in Sept, stopping thru Bay of Fundy and also detouring to Nova Scotia! Then we're going to Ottawa to see my DB and his family.

Canada is a BIG country. What area/province were you planning on visiting? When we know that we could probably give you better, more focused recommendations.

had an Irishman stop at the local garage to get his bike fixed for his "across the country tour" was discouraged that it was taking so long!! did not look that big on a map he said!:shocked: he should be in Vancouver by winter!

Nimrod 07/28/11 08:02 PM

Don't forget that the Canadians are afraid that we are going to invade so they don't allow you to bring any guns into Canada. The Americans are afraid that you are a terrorist so everyone in the group has to have at least a passport card to get back into the US. You don't want to spend the rest of your life in Canada, do you eh.

HOTW 07/28/11 08:45 PM

If you decide to go to Sudbury I suggest you try camping a few nights on the FrenchRiver- spent many a summer night there! Great area- lots of variety to the river.

Ford M- nope just going to Ottawa to seemy Brother he lives there(Olean) works for Military. We re thinking about settlng in the Maritimes I love being near water nd we want a smaller community attitude! So we are going tobe doing some exploring. Grew up in Ontario but soo expensive I dont think we could afford to buywithout going way nrth and thats too remote. My mum think PEI is a place I will love.

fordson major 07/28/11 09:03 PM

me too!! have lots of maritimer friends and have visited down there a lot!! found a tiny port of sanity here in Ont though! Manitoulin island on Georgian bay!! moderating temps and prices not bad!! other area would be Carleton county New Brunswick (Orleans/Ottawa is Carleton county Ontario!), there is a HT'r there but can't recall who!! lots of HTers in Ottawa though!!

pheasantplucker 07/29/11 04:51 AM

Second one here to suggest Manitoulin Island...Very pretty...especially take "The cup and saucer trail".

Lauri 07/29/11 12:35 PM

We are thinking of either going through detroit into Windsor coming back to MI through the Soo.

Or

Heading out through the Soo and going up and around taking the ferry back from WI.

I know.......not very adventoursome, but since my husband has never been to a "foriegn" country:smack (please quit laughing) this really is going to be a stretch for him.

Anyone have opinions on good "color" times to head that way.

We are thinking the first week of Oct??

Thank you

Ross 07/29/11 05:36 PM

I'm zero help I like crusing back roads looking for old barns and machinery dealerships for old or weird farm equipment. But if thats your thing..... :)

Rob30 07/29/11 06:08 PM

What are you looking to do in Canada? Camp, sight see, etc. It depends on how much money you want to spend. I live beside Algonquin Park. Great camoing are, lots of wildlife. Manatoulin Island is nice. But you should know don't visit in October to November. Deer season is wild there. The deer out number people 4 to 1. Hunting season sounds like WWII. I would be afraid of stray bullets. East coast is nice. West coast is nice and expensive. Praries are flat, makes for a long long drive. Ontario and Quebec are nice. If you are going to a city I prefer Ottawa to Toronto. The only thing I know of that is worth seeing in Toronto is a Jays game. Its always nice to see them beet one of the American teams.

Elffriend 07/29/11 07:59 PM

How much driving do you want to do? If you cross over at Windsor, it's about 4.5 hrs to Niagara Falls.

Do you like historical reenactment places? There's Fanshawe Pioneer Village outside London and Doon Heritage Crossroads in Kitchener. There are others, but those are the two I've been to. How old are your kids? There's a children's museum in Waterloo. If you're into amusement parks, Canada's Wonderland in Toronto is pretty big. If you want to see animals up close and personal, African Lion Safari is a nice place to visit.

Thank you

First off, once you get to the border, you need to spell it "colour".

later September, early October you will get some good colour in the leaves. It has been quite a few years, but I think there are a lot of coniferous trees, so those will obviously still be green.

If you are coming in early October, just realize that the temps can get chilly at night, so bring lots of blankets or a camper with a heater.

Harry Chickpea 07/30/11 06:30 PM

You do have passports?

If you are camping, you might get a fishing license. When we were on the Trent Severn, in some lakes the fish were biting at our toothpaste.

Lauri 07/30/11 11:27 PM

Rob30......Will be camping, like to sight see, but generally not the touristy type of things, more natural type of sights for us. We like to do things on the cheap. Thanks for the tip regarding the WWII hunting season.

Elffriend.......I mentioned Niagra, DH has never been, so we are def considering this. No children and niehter of us is into amusement parks.

Paw........thanks for the spelling tip!!

Harry.........We have the "enhanced" DL......takes the place of a passport for travel to Canada, Mexico, Caribbean....one other place, but can't think where at the moment
