I know.......not very adventoursome, but since my husband has never been to a "foriegn" country  (please quit laughing) this really is going to be a stretch for him.
Anyone have opinions on good "color" times to head that way.

First off, once you get to the border, you need to spell it "colour".
later September, early October you will get some good colour in the leaves. It has been quite a few years, but I think there are a lot of coniferous trees, so those will obviously still be green.
If you are coming in early October, just realize that the temps can get chilly at night, so bring lots of blankets or a camper with a heater.
