Nothing to suggest--just wanted you to know we are sorry to hear DH is laid up, and hope he will be back up and around soon.

Tight wire. Loop handle at gate end. Sign telling them to "Shake it, shake it, baby - the other end of the wire is attached to a hand-bell at the house".

I have a big bell... people never ring it they think its an "orniment"

for you, I have seen exactly what you need, I will hunt the place I saw it and post a link if i can find it.

some security company I saw makes a solar powered wireless security camera & intercom system, I was really excited to find it and I KNOW i saw it was in like 3 fdifferent type pricewise, a low contrast B&W basic set up, up to a delux hiQ color set up. It was cool because the remote camera/micriphone was run off a battery and charged up by a solar panel, like a solar fence charger. It may be an investment, but if he is bed redden and its a real problem with the traffic in and out I think it would be well worth the cash.

electricity wise, here is low tech, good cure. Set up a weather proof box, go to radio shack and get an intercom system... they are pretty cheap. run 100-150 feet of outdoor extention cord out to the gate and connect the intercom up, they just plug in and use the power wire to send/recieve. (i used to have this in my barn to house, about 100 ft or so, it lasted for years..)

if your jittery about the extention cord (no need to be) you can run a permenent romex wire, good underground UV wire (its usually greay and stiff) and run it out to the gate, just make sure you know where it is on the ground. Personally i would do the extention cord thing, its orange you can see it and its flexable.... I tied mine up in the trees with zip ties and along the side of part of the fence. in the house where you plug it in, use a 15Amp breaker strip. (one with 5 or 6 outlets ya know?)
that worked for iknow at least a good 8 yrs out to my barn, the intercom worked fine, I still have all 3 units i a box somewhere, cell phones made them obsolete around here.

theres another kiss idea. lock the gate and post a phone number to get the gate unlocked. Most everyone has a cell phone anymore, so that would work.

But you can always just get a couple of big strong springs put on the gate... it always closes by itself. Also a nice note on the gate that says "anyone who leaves gate open subject to a $100 fine" make it look really official, sign it and everything.

Kiss principle... joan if we keep agreeing like this you know hell may freeze over. :haha:

Little Q
We bought a wireless doorbell from Walmart for around 20.00. Don't buy the one that runs off of a battery on both ends. Get the one that uses a battery at the gate and uses electricity on the other end (plugs into wall). We have used both and the one that uses the most batteries is of poor quality and eats batteries. It also gave off false alarms alot, maybe caused by c.b.ers The one I recommended does not eat batteries. We change batteries (good quality battery) about once a year and it is out in the weather. Of course you might want to wrap a clear plastic bag over it to keep rain from getting inside it. We have had ours for about 4 years now with no problems. Be sure to check the range for distance on the package. You can call your local walmart and ask someone to make sure they have them before making the trip to town. If not, try Lowes or Home Depot.
Hope you find a solution.

You could always try these:

www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=54844

''Each heavy-duty Phone is approx. 9 1/2 x 6 x 4" and 7 1/2 lbs., with 17" coiled cord that extends to over 60"
Olive Drab canvas covers with adjustable shoulder strap
Designed for range up to 8 miles... if you can run connecting wire that distance. Wire sold separately below
Powered by 2 D batteries (not included)... plus a hand crank that rings the other phone. ''

Wire is available for $15 for 1300'.

Hope this helps.

Don't know if this will help... but we use something similar to this on our offsite lots at work...

Driveway Alarms

We used fairly cheap units at work... ran about 50 bucks each...

How's the cellular service in your area?

If your visitors have cel phones, and you've got reliable cel service, just have them call the house from the gate.
