Count me in! Born and raised in the Metromess, I'm now in Garland, but I have to move by the end of June 2004. Since I won't have the info and money lined up in time, I'm stuck with moving into Dallas proper for a year before I hopefully end up in Hunt Co., East Texas. :yeeha: Judi

TEDH71, I know what you mean! Luckily DH is a Journeyman Plumber and he works out of San Antonio! Taxes aren't too bad but The cost of land is ridiculous!(sp) We are trying to sellour small place to buy a larger one in the Dripping Springs area and it is crazy! 20,000 for an acre ! We are looking into getting at least 10-15 acres so you can imagine!

Rose (near me) ... We are meeting the guy tomorrow to find the best placement for the mobile on the property!

Hercsmamma,

Hello neighbor! I am so glad you posted how expensive land is here. Someone up in Dallas argued that the land isn't that expensive in TX. LOL. I know they were talking about scrub brush country where there is NO water available. But, really around here, land to too expensive to even think about. Way further out it is a little less expensive but, SA has grown so much that you need to drive an hour or more to get futher out from town.

I used to live around I-10 & DeZavala and we used to cut firewood where the huge shopping area is now. That was out in the boonies then. Now it takes 1/2 an hour to go 2 miles in that area.

I remember looking at the land deals they had going on up at Spring Branch about 10 years ago. It was too expensive for my blood even then.

Thinking about a get-together in TX. TX is just too big for a whole get together! We need to divide up into: Central TX, E. TX, W. TX, etc. Maybe, E. TX folks could join up with folks in the whole ArkLaTx area.....hmmm. I would like to know folks around E. TX. before we move though...

I am sure we can find some meeting of the minds here... seems most of us are on east side of the middle of texas... not too many on the west side...

sooooooooooo.. we just need to put our heads together... and find a nice easy place for us all to get together and whoop and holler and eat...

In Houston...for now...

my dad's folks are from Tenaha in East TX.

God willing and the creek don't rise we will be in Brazoria county before long. (which you can see would make the creek rising of particular concern :haha: in fact dh and I are celebrating valentines day by leaving the kidlets with their grandfather while we drive out this evening to take a look at some of the land prospects to see how they are faring with all of this rain. How romantic )

I'm curious why you call yourself a "Texican". We won independence from Mexico a very, very long time ago.
I'm a sixth generation TEXAN.

Cabin Fever...I remember playing against Garrison back in the 70's. Lowly Beckville is hoping to get downgraded again, to maybe class B, in football....

Mary...I worked in Alaska for ten years at Denali NP, and for the longest I was the only Texan there, then one year two other Texians invaded the Park staff, and my nickname was changed to the bald texican...Bald and from Texas...without any radio or tv reception, everyone relied on videotapes for their cultural enlightenment...and after a couple of westerns, an old hand shouted out 'there's the '''baldtexican''' ', after someone in a movie, either The Alamo or Audie Murphy's Texican , mentioned being a texican...the name stuck, and thereverafter, I was the bald texican...

doing geneaology, I've found a dozen scions in this county along, most 5 and 6th generation. If the families could've just kept a little more of their land, or better yet had a patrilineal dispersal of land and assets, (only first born males)I'd be sitting prettier than I am now.

If you want cheaper land, move away from a yuppies commuting distance. Very little land goes for more than 1500 hereabouts, quite a bit goes for 800, bought timberland a few years ago (would make pasture, if I clearcut and cleaned up) for 500. Own an undivided interest in a ~40 acre tract, and if we get 2000/acre for it, I'd faint...will probably eventually be sold for 1200 to 1500, utilities, and paved road frontage.

Be careful.. there are flood warnings for all the rivers out that way... I know when we drove out to our property on thursday... ALL the rivers were way up... The Brazos, the Colorado, the Navidad, were all close to to jumping their banks.. and it looked like the Bernard had already rose above its banks...

The Navidad was a couple of feet of coming over the bridge to get into our property, I would think about now.. its probably right up to the bridge..
SOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooo Be so very careful..

I'm just outside the great little town of Santa Anna in Coleman Co. (16 mi. W. of Brownwood). Property values are really low around here -- around $750. - $1,000. an acre and usually on County water. It pays to get away from the big cities.

I live in South East Texas, Piney Woods area. My taxes for this year were 340.00 for property and school tax combined. After you are 65 you get a cut. We have 10 acre's, a barn, a garage, and more out buildings. And 2,000 sq. foot older farm house. So if your looking for less in taxes in Texas, Then south east is the place to come.

Texican I agree the taxes are too high. I live in Collin country and my school taxes were $1900 this year.

Gonna go play in the snow...
