It seems that over 50 percent of the answers you got had a bit of negativity in them. I personally thinkt hat part of the country is amazingly beautiful. If that is where you and your family want to homestead then do it! I am sure that in the old days settlers and native americans survived there, so can you. Just takes some planning. Like we do our stock up of food etc in september so we wont have to haul the heavy stuff by snowmobile later. It is not big deal and can lead to some really funny experiences! Hope you and your family get exactly what you want and have a wonderful homesteading adventure. sisterpine

Things might come across as negative, but hopefully most of it is with the goal of "eyes wide open". If you have the right mindset, it's well withing your ability to do, but I've seen lots of people come with rose colored glasses, and they don't stick around long. It's one of the things I love about the area, it's not "easy" and that keeps the rif-raf out.

The growing season is long enough, you just have to work with it. And since prepping for winter is a way of life to many, it's easy to find help with that. Hard to find sources of cheap canning jars though - but in a town of 14,000, I have 6 places that carry a nice supply of home canning equipment, and three of them carry them year round.

How far from Rapid are you going to be? That is the second biggest metro area in the State so they have some decent choices for shopping and stocking up.
