i believe if i were a bit younger, a bit more adventurous, and, had even a dribble of dependable outside income, i'd be looking at the mountainous areas of tropical regions in central and south america

bugs

Another reason we are in AZ is bugs. My DH can't stand mosquitos but the flies do bother him. Forgot to mention wind. As it doesn't bother either of us, it was not an issue. Our cheap land included a good producing well(so far). Our growing season is from mid April to the end of October. We do use drip and compost a lot. We do plan on a larger market garden this year.

Hi, Sorry I was not signed on when I replied earlier. I don't get alergies. There is a time in the spring when the decks turn yellow with pollen from all of the trees so if you are alergic to pollen, that would probably not be good. The air is so much cleaner than in Colorado, where I moved from - I think it is because of all of the rain.

Anything grows here! Put a stick in the ground and I swear it will grow. I have 4.5 acres of great loam soil - just moved in in September and can't wait to start gardening! The season is also very long, the only limitation is that it is cooler than most places so plants that like very hot weather won't do as well. There are so many fir trees everywhere that shade can be an issue - I am lucky to have almost two acres of open land with a clear southern exposure.

One other thing - no poisonous snakes! It is so pleasant to walk around in my woods without worrying about snakes. There are a few kinds of nasty spiders, but they generally stay hidden - just need to be careful the wood pile - wear gloves.

Today was sunny and around 60 - got to work outside all day.

Shrek posted some pictures of my place on the_singletree.tripod.com
