Crepe Myrtles can be pruned down to a stick and they'll grow back --

This is crazy, I'd tell then where they could put their law

Can you imagine a jail house talk between a couple inmates:
Inmate 1:"What are you in for?"
Inmate 2:"Improper Pruning"

Municipal tree ordinances are nothing new. The city we lived in before moving into the county had a muni tree ordinance requiring at least two hard wood trees per acre of residential property 40 years ago and still does as the city prides itself for its tree lined subdivisions.

When a bare piece of acreage is developed , the home contractor must plant a couple trees to be within city building codes.

If the church referenced in the article opposes the ordinance they will have to take it up with the council as their ordinance has been in place for more than 30 years.

My thoughts. . .Their trees on their property tell the government to stuff it.

I would go out one night and cut every tree down on my property...then move.

My trees, unless someone else wants to pay for them.

The standard reply to such matters should be MYOB.

I read that if they have to replace them they can't replace them with CMs.
so not only are they being told that they must replace them (but they are not dead) or add more trees if not removed (then why fine if they are alright to stay?)they must replace them with something that is "approved". sounds like way to replace CMs at someone else $$

"That could include having the church add trees instead of removing and replacing the topped ones, according to a staff memo on the incident prepared for City Council."

OK, I agree that's stupid telling someone that they have to pick from an "approved" list of trees.

I still think it is preposterous to tell a property owner what they can do on their own land. The local government has easements on both sides of the road. If they want certain trees, looking a certain way, plant them there and maintain them as they wish and leave private property alone.

Amen. This is literally just up the street from where I live.
The only thing I can say is that I consider myself fortunate I'm allowed my chickens and goats in this county. There isn't much else good I have to say about this little corner of the world I wanted so desperately to live in.

I think its great if people want to live in an area where they want the government to tightly control their lives and the lives of their neighbors. I think its great that some folks are worried about ugly streets and are concerned about what their neighbor does because it may affect their property values. Lots of folks need that feeling of comfort or they may just like to live in an orderly place. I am just thankful to not live in that type of environment and its precisely why I moved from a very beautiful but suffocating (to me) place like that. I have to drive down the road to even see any of my neighbors and they could cut down all their trees and plant crab grass for all I care as it wouldnt affect me. Seriously, its very liberating being off the "gotta watch property values, must conform to community standards bus". I understand it and rode it myself for years but man reading things like this just makes me smile even while I sit here pulling ticks off me and the Mrs.

Back where I grew up, the oaks were protected. We had a 200 year old oak in the front yard. So we were not allowed to have a lawn underneith as lawn= watering= would kill the oak. I was glad for that law...I hate lawns and my front yard was a wonderful xeroscape!
