Vaccines are like seatbelts. They aren't perfect because humans aren't perfect and vary from one individual to another but the facts show without question that they save far more lives than they take.

Not vaccinating allows people to become infected and turns them into incubators for the bug where there is always a chance the bug can mutate into something that can have serious impacts on our population.
This.

Vaccines are like seatbelts.
Honestly? That is brilliant!!

Sometimes seat belts malfunction, through no fault of the owner, and it costs them their lives or the lives of ones they love.
Sometimes seat belts, are not handled correctly, and it costs them their lives, or the lives of ones they love.
Sometimes they are not used at all.
And nothing bad happens.

Now we have laws DEMANDING you wear them, like it or not.
And if you don't you are fined, and it goes on your record, and your insurance goes up (money money money)

Funny.....everyone must wear a seatbelt.......except school buses?
Why is that??

MONEY MONEY MONEY.

What's with the long and rambling post laura....
Um, it's all about the money. Who's making it, and how much.
Funny, humans will tell you what ever you WANT to hear to disassociate you from your money.

I have never heard that before.....do you have a handful of links that point me to the source of this information? Thanks!

I read the link about all the evils of vaccines....and all the evil stuff in them.....but....that's only telling me the evils.
I am curious about the benefits. And the evidence that proves it.

Yes vaccines are like seat belts in respect that they save more lives than they take.

Yes seat belts do cause death and injury BUT..........

By wearing seat belts the number of lives lost is far far far lower than if no one wore seat belts.

It was also on the recommendation of our doctor. The point of the thread was to compare when the last time our non-vaccinated children were sick. Others don't get participation points on this one.
A serious question; are doctors now advising parents not to vaccinate in some cases? I have never heard of that and back when our kids were little the doctors acted like you had no choice but to fully vaccinate. I am wondering if the medical world has now had a change of heart.

Salmonslayer.. I really think it depends on the doctor. You would think it would be a liability for them to recommend against it. When we had our last baby, we refused some of the newborn shots and the staff was more than happy to oblige that request. However, we caught heck at our baby's 2nd week checkup from the new pediatrician. He basically stated that our baby WAS GOING TO GET HIS IMMUNIZATIONS.

I'm not sure if (within the medical world) it's:
1. This is the way it is.. like a clockwork schedule, this is how we do things.
2. It's based on MY perrogative and my medical schooling (doctor)
3. It's based on what the parents want
4. It's based on the doctor & parent working together and coming to a decision,

etc..

I believe our doctor was doing his job: he was putting our child's best interest FIRST based on our child's condition and medical history. Lots of doctors just treat you like a business appt. They go through the emotions but rarely apply emotions to you, if that makes sense? Our doctor never said, "NEVER immunize EVER". Before we decided to stop altogether, he would say, "well, it's time for XXX to get their shots.. here is what is on the list.. and here is what it is for, what it does, and whether or not I think it's good to get NOW, wait till LATER, or just avoid it altogether because there's not enough supporting research. And ps.. this one is a trial or just an extra just in case." He also never recommended flu shots. He basically went old-school there.. he would say "wash hands, sleep, avoid this and that" etc. He was quick to remind us that we shouldn't be swimming in hand sanitizer etc. it was never his way or the highway, he encouraged us to not just follow the flow.. but to do the research and be active/educated in our children's health and care.

I agree with Forerunner on a few points.. that the FDA plays a huge role and money is king. I'm sorry.. I wandered off a bit. I don't think the medical world is changing their opinions though, I believe you'll get varied responses from all types in the medical field.

Thanks for the response runbunch, when I grew up the polio vaccine was fairly new and we actually has classes in school that touted the benefits of immunizations and Jonas Saulk was a god...in fact we used to get shots and the polio vaccine in school. I remember when our 5 kids were little (oldest is 31 and youngest is now 24) we were deffinitely not as aware of things and you just basically did what the doctor said because he was...the doctor. Now there is so much more information available that I would think its much harder being a parent and trying to make these decisions and weighing the risks -vs- benefits of vaccinating/not vaccinating and I am actually glad we are beyond that in our family. I like to see that some doctors seem to be taking the patients/parents wishes into consideration and not just blindly towing the party line like they used to.

For what its worth we lived and travelled internationally frequently so we didnt really have much choice in keeping up with the vaccinations anyway and our kids are all very healthy and suffered no ill effects so far but if we had the information and choice I think we would have taken a very serious look at some of the shots that we gave them. One thing I think everyone can agree on is that nutrition and exercise are vital to health whether you immunize or not. Good luck.
