If you want to follow Windyfarms suggestion, there is a thing called a scat mat that gives a mild shock. It's for teaching cats to stay off the counter and dogs to stay off the sofa.

It's probably not rated for outside, but should be OK if you have a covered porch. It's small, but all you need is for them to stay away from a very small area in front of the door.

We had a client with one of these on the couch. Worked great for the cat and then one day DH sat on it, too. I think it was set on "high." LOL.
