Many ranchers have lost all their grazing to the fires. Some people are trying to get loads of hay to take out there. Normally don't expect rain till July or August so grass can't regrow. News reports say driest yr since 1917.
South winds are bringing in more humidity, so that is helpful. Also read that some of the fires were being blown back into already burned ground and going out. Still new fires all over. Perry asking for Fed disaster declaration. Report that only 2 counties in TX not affected? Couldn't find a confirmation on that. There was a fire in Travis co yesterday, south Austin, but they got it under control.

We drove from Houston to Dallas yesterday.
Very smokey on the way up, between Madisonville and Corsicana.

I've been hoping and praying that all our people in TX are okay, and unaffected by those horrid fires The reports just look so terrible. Please stay safe.
Cyngbaeld, would wearing one of the surgical masks or those you get for flu outbreaks help at all with your asthma? Might be worth considering for your BOB if it would help. Asthma attack would be nasty in themiddle of a bug out.

There was a bit of dew on the truck this morning, so humidity is rising some which will help with the fires. It's been in the single digits around here for the last week. I tried to go to San Angelo on Friday but turned back due to a big fire in that area -- didn't want to get caught so far from home. Thankfully all we've had in this county are smaller ones that the volunteer fire dept. has been able to get under control quickly. I'm baking some cookies right now and plan on taking them to the FD later this afternoon. Those guys and gals are all working overtime -- and they are all volunteers.
The air is murky and yesterday there was fine ash everywhere, and we are 50+ miles from any of the larger fires. My heart really goes out to those who have lost their pasturelands, homes, and livestock.

The smoke was pouring in here Friday afternoon but has cleared out with the south winds. Still no rain.

My dear friend and her hubby lost their home late last night. They don't know the exact extent of the loss, just what they were told by a firefighter friend of theirs who is working that part of the fire. She is coming here tomorrow with her kids and dog to stay, while her dh stays there. They are still not letting anyone in or out of the general lake area, and he is going to wait to go back as soon as they will let people in. I'm heartbroken for her, and for all the others who lost their homes.

Saw some footage of a huge house burning--that thing was going up like an absolute inferno. No way anything could have been left intact inside it. I just pray their home didn't burn that way.
Quote "This is just very sad that they are that close too one of the largest lakes in Tx and can't protect the houses" The Brazos River Authority is to thank for that, with their foolish water rights shennanigans.
On a more local note... we are starting to see forest fires in our general area. One not far away in Hardin county.

Just took a long look at the weather in the moonglow from about 75 miles north of Galveston. Lots of clouds moving fast to the North. Some appear dark like smoke , but I don't believe there are any fires to the South. No smoke smell from the Big Thicket fire since the wind shifted.
Does anyone have fresh news about the fire in the Tyler area? Houston weather guy seemed to think that the latest heavy rain storms moving across the Midwest could dip down south of Dallas and wet the Tyler area. My concerns are small compared to family homes lost or under threat. May Mother Nature bless all by changing weather conditions to remove fire danger...Glen

I live 40 miles north of Tyler; we're forecast for 50% chance of heavy storms/possible tornadoes. It's been misting all day in Winnsboro & Mt. Vernon.
We need the rain badly; if it doesn't hit soon, the hay crop is going to be very poor. Sounds like a bunch of it will need to be shipped to the folks out west of us, if we get any.
Hoping we get a hay crop so we can help out...
Also hope Tyler area doesn't burn. DH has to travel there 2-3 times a week. With him being a volunteer firefighter, I wouldn't put it past him to stop and render aid, without telling me. I like to have at least some advance notice before developing more grey hairs.

We've had a lot of smoke here. It's not really noticeable today, but for a few days there it was really bad.

It has been smokey here for WEEKS!!! The fire that caused the Rotan/Roby evacuation was awful..
Three weeks ago THIS was MY property:
Burned 10 acres total......about 75% of my place and some of my neighbors stuff behind me.....Got 28ftfrom my goat barn & pen....hubby and I used all 5 of our fire extinguishers, plus the water hose keeping it away from the goats until the FD arrived. Thankfully nothing special was lost other than my stack of supplies and materials to build my chicken coop with
We watched helicopters fill up at stock tanks and ponds to battle the Sweetwater/Roby/Rotan fires...
Praying for all of those who lost homes & loved ones....we lost our house in 07 to a fire so I know how hard it is....Heard on TSN news that a 51 year old volunteer fire fighter lost his life battling one of the blazes
Praying for rain.....it got cooler here, with 20% chance of showers, but so far all I see is a clear, starry sky with the ever present smoke on the horizon..

It acted like it was going to rain here last night, big black clouds to the north and west of us. Cooled down considerably, then went around us without raining a drop. This morning is cool and a wee bit misty in the air, but you can still smell the smoke pretty strong.

My friend and her kids arrived yesterday morning late, and were just exhausted.
She spent the day on the phone trying to determine what damage had been updated.
Their home is a complete and total loss--nothing at all will be salvagable.
The back of her SUV had possessions just thrown in, loose. I went and bought some rubbbermaid totes today and packed their possessions in them so they wouldn't become damaged. She had just been grabbing and throwing things in--pictures, documents, valuables, artwork, clothing, etc. All in a jumble.

Map of all the fires. You can zoom out and see where they are located then zoom in further and see the extent of each fire.

A mask might help some. I do have a box of them.
