Good Idea, there are many folks that need these Beautiful trees saved. My Parents had 1 Ash and 1 Cherry that protected the South side of the house from the sun. That South side was all Glass. Some people will be long gone before another tree can take it's place in the Landscape.

Here in MI they tried everything to stop it---no luck! It hit here first in 2002 and has killed 10's of millions of trees just here. Good luck, I hope they figure out how to stop it there!

there is a treatment that you can try, plugs that you drill a hole and pound into the tree, but, if you have hundreds and hundreds of them, not likely will be able to afford that.

They have had some luck using the parasitic wasp that feeds on the Emerald Ash Borer larva.

We're facing the same thing. I'm watching it come north at us and planning to deal with it. The plan is cutting. We are also facing the advance of the Asian longhorn beetle which is decimating the Maple trees.

We have, what I think are, ash trees. They became ill for awhile, but we left them alone and now they seem to be recovering. The destruction of the trees may have as much to do with them getting weak during summer weather as with the ash borer. Our town destroyed all the same type of trees that were on city property.

As far as fast growing trees-silver maples grow VERY fast, as do cottonwoods, both can be pesky, though. Silvers have roots very close to the ground surface.

I'm sorry to hear you're losing your ash.

Just remember, before they go, kiss your ash goodbye.

Most people don't know how to appreciate a good piece of ash.

Don't dwell on this...Get off your ash, and concentrate on another tree.

And finally, if the loss is too much to bear, cut yourself a piece off for the memories...It's always wise to save your own ash.

Please! If anyone has a chance, before you choose to cut your trees, try to harvest and save seed for future reforestation. The federal government as well as many states have programs to collect as many ash seed as possible in case the ash borer cannot be stopped. A quick google search can help you find info. I will be saving as much seed as I can this year and I plan on storing some of it myself.

Tinknal, I believe Minnesota has a state program in place to save the genetics of Minnesota's ash tree population. You might check it out.

That is true but.....trees have chemical means to prevent insects from surviving while they are doing the mechanical damage.

Would it be possible to monitor the trees and saw them when you see them dying since the damage the borers do is outside the wood?

Yeah, I plan on waiting for them to die before I cut them. The borers don't damage the wood in any way, and I don't think letting them stand for a year will hurt the quality of the wood.
