Heck, there are illegal aliens from Me'ico getting ss and medicaid, and they sure don't have birth certificates.

If you can, I'd apply in person.
I did it this way and the SS guy was very helpful and managed to increase my spouses SS because we would both be getting SS -- don't remember the details, but it was nice to get the increase that I would have missed.

Maybe I'm an optimist, but I don't see SS going away for young or old people.

Congratulations!
It's a tough decision on whether to put in for it early or not. I really don't think any thing the geniuses in DC come up with would effect you one way or the other as far as getting yours, don't file out of fear. The health insurance is the big buggaboo and many more would get out early if there was cheaper health insurance.
Social Security is a great political football as it effects so many of us commoners. They love to throw around all of the scare facts and figures knowing it will get a rise out of the unknowing populus. Without SS and it's disability benefits most would have little or nothing when they got old or if they became disabled. To think the whole system will collapse is like saying the whole country will collapse. I think most doom and gloomers almost want the self fulfilling prophecy though they don't realize what they're asking for.

Everyone's situation is different.
I retired at 62 but DH was still working. (he's younger) I did not take SS til ripe age of 66, for full $$. Dh, however, will take it at 62, b/c we'll both be retired.

Social Security is one of those successful liberal programs. Fortunately, it is ingrained within our society, and those who wish to dismantle it will pay a huge political price.

For many I know, it will be there ONLY income.

For now, people can get "partial" benefits at age 62. Its a tradeoff. One receives a smaller benefit check at age 62, than if they had waited a few years.
Know that you'll be "locked in" to this amount for your remaining years.

Please keep that in mind. So you must keep whatever Health Insurance you have now,, keep that being paid up.~@!
Hmmm, thats interesting... They gave me my medicare with my first benefit check. but then I had waited nearly three years getting it so the waiting period may have been counted in that time frame.
