Johnny Dolittle - you nailed it! I live just below Meadville. My husband goes out to Brookville sometimes for a rendezvous for black powder shooters.

NJ Rich gives everyone a general idea. Springsteen County is another give away.

You would need to find me but that maybe hard to do. The peopel in the general area are of far more concern to me than HT members.

BTW: People give far too much info on Facebook than they do here.

I would like to know some NJ HT memebers that maybe close by but that would be by Private Messaging.

Maybe there should be a warning when you register? Something like "We don't need to know your street address but putting your general location on your header will help you get better replies with less aggravation to the Forum populous"?

I am one of those who do not want my personal identification information pasted over the internet. When I ask for help with something, it is just as easy to identify the weather, climate, zone, situation, etc. without giving out enough for some stranger to track me down. I prefer it that way for safety concerns.

So which is better Pa or Idaho?
Idaho of course. I love the climate, no more sinus problems, a lot less taxes, and love the mountains. A whole different life style that agrees with me.
My whole family is back in PA.

This is my thought too.

I was on a parenting board a few years ago and a friend of mine on that board let it slip that she raised her own meat and that the kids helped take care of the animals. There was an outrage that she was doing that and with a little sleuthing one person figured out where she lived and called CPS and Animal Protection on her. She spent a few months dealing with them and in the end she was cleared, but ever since then I keep as much as I can as private as I can. The only time I do differently is if I have a gardening question and then I will tell you what zone I'm in.

That certainly should be your right and I respect that.

But giving your home state hardly pinpoints where you live.

I think many here did not provide their location simply because they were not thinking when they registered... and not because they had objections to doing so.

Born in Hamilton Ohio, live in a very small town near Reform, AL. West Central. My children actually went to Reform school at one time. I didnt like it at all. But we grow good tomaters, potaters, onions, lettuce and children..............

I should have used peaches in my OP instead of head lettuce. Zones are only concerned with minimal average temperatures and have nothing to do with frost free dates or maximum average temperatures. However if I know the state and zone I can infer some generalizations about the growing season.

If you are growing head lettuce you need to avoid temps in the teens and above 90 degrees generally. But if you are in zones 8-10 you have little concern with low temperatures and more concern with high temperatures.

As far as state location there can be a lot of variability in temperatures. Here in Pa. you can grow peaches in lower tier counties but forget the upper tier counties.

Peaches would have been a better example in my OP because winter temps in single digits will kill the fruiting buds which form the previous growing season.... so it is minimum average temperatures which limit preach growing.

So I agree with you that zones alone don't tell that much... but they are a helpful input when considering the other relevant factors.

I wasn't implying location should be mandatory but only that it is helpful for me when answering questions.

I respect your right

Live in 5a, on the border with 5b. Farm on the edge of 4b, in 5a, in 5b, and possibly in 6a depending how my rental offer turns out.

Lots of options in Ontario, from 0a to 7a.

OK OK OK

I respect your right to keep your location confidential.

But how much less interesting would this site be if revealing your general location was forbidden ?

There used to be a map of the members. Not sure what happened to it. Maybe one of the moderators knows.

Now that is a great area .... very scenic ... I like the area around Ashville and spent two weeks in Pisgah National Forest one time years ago.

Good homesteading climate!
