Me too. Never had a problem. People pick wild mushrooms and berries here on park/public land throughout the season, and I've never heard of anyone being arrested for picking dandelions! Bold print notwithstanding, TXaprilMagic is misinformed.

Trespassing on private land is another issue.

Yes it is easily doable, though not entirely simple. The one person said there is no wild land left. I assume they have never looked at a map of Canada. Most of the land up here is wild, and in remote areas could supply one indefinitely with red meat, fish, wild fruits, nuts, roots, mushrooms, rice, cattails, etc..

We added a few more wild plants to our diet today. The agricultural agent sent me information about the plant samples I had sent to the laboratory. I added wild garlic to our meat loaf and had a chickweed side dish that was delicious.

I am learning, if one is going to stay healthy eating wild plants, one should know what their own body needs and know the nutritious details of the wild plants they consume. Whether we eat wild plants or not, we still need to maintain the elements our individual bodies require.

Oh I would love to learn about foraging wild edibles. I'd even be willing to let someone come here and hunt the wild shroom in exchange for lessons on what, where, when and how to forage...... I was just listening to a program on Mycology in our area, there is a guy, Steve Brill, in NYC who has a website that is informative - www.wildmanstevebrill.com - that I visited for a sec. Very interesting. Reb

Excellent. Where is it? Where is all this land that nobody owns. If nobody owns it, I am going to go and grab myself a few thousand acres.

If nobody owns it, there is nobody to complain.

No un-owned land in Oregon. It all belongs to private, to the Forestry companies, to the State government, or the federal government.

Gathering mushrooms and harvesting small amounts of fiddlehead ferns is allowed, but a permit is needed. Collecting plant life is against the law with severe fines. Hunting is allowed in season and with a permit. Same with fishing, clamming, crabbing.

You might get yourself shot, if that "wild" land is privately owned.

Notice, just because you can see it does not mean it is available for your use. It belongs to somebody.

REALLY?!?! Ugh, I thought you could go gather in "public" land in OR. We did it my whole childhood (which wasn't that long ago)...go figure.

Euell Gibbons asked permission before he gathered on wild land. The owner of a wild piece of land will be listed in the tax roles.

In the north central region of Minnesota where we live, the Federal government owns 37% of the land area, the State of Minnesota owns 13%, county/city governments own 21%. That is over 70%. Most of this land is available to hunt on or forage for wild edibles. Pretty much all of our lakes (99% +) are also open to the public to fish. Of course, one will need a license to hunt or fish or harvest wild rice.

Years ago i bought a series of books by Tom Brown. That's exactly what he did. Went off into the woods with a knife and a loin cloth and came back a year later! Weighed more upon his return than when he left! At least that's how i remember it! He had a few field guides out about surviving in the wild!
