For many people, it is called the "Earned Income Credit".

I'm not going to get into it, but it is a pretty controversial tax credit. It is legit, and legal, if you qualify for it.

We did ours and got a refund, paid down consumer debt. Hubster wasn't very happy about that, but our savings and checking account are growing now, not having those recurring payments, and that's only after a month of minimized debt!

We do get a nice refund as hubster has to take his work's med insurance, and he pays $16k a year for it. Highway robbery, and I don't know how they get away with it, but it is what it is. He was also claiming "single, zero dependents" to get that refund. I've got him claiming married 5 now. I don't like giving the gov't an interest free loan either.

Miine are done by the middle of February every year. They would be done by the first week of January, but I always have to wait on the Wife's employer for her W-2. I dont understand why they wait til the end of January. They know its comming. They have computer programs that keep all that iinfo stored and organised all year long. I dont understand why, on january 1st, the computers cant just print them.

I was not commenting about taxes in general. I was commenting specifically on federal income taxes. There are people/families who pay zero federal income tax but still get a refund.

Or who do pay, but get larger refund than taxes paid. I hate this time of year, hearing everyone talk about spending their tax refunds, part of which is MY money.

We have to file fed but get back what we paid in to state. I think that is right. DH is retired and draws ss plus his pension and we have taxes held out of that.

Yes, there are, I have friends that pay zero (zero!) and got almost $6K BACK (and paid zero!), plus get almost $700 a month in food stamps a month (and only have two kids), mean while I get zero food stamps and PAY taxes at the end of the year....how many days a month does it take me to make actual cash to make up for the amount of money other people get for free?????? Oh, well, I'm just sounding sour and this is probably general chat stuff.

Only because you choose to pay those income taxes. There are lots of ways to avoid paying income taxes. Learn them and save yourself the money.

Ours are done, but won't be mailed until the very last moment because we owe money.
