My mil kept valuables & cash hidden in books, little pockets sewn in the linings of clothes, inside a panel cut in the wall & disguised. She was a child in Europe, who lived through both WW1 and the depression which preceded it, the one the States didn't experience that much, and then the Great Depression. There was no convincing her not to keep stuff around but hidden. But she was robbed anyway, and many valuables & family keepsakes found. Not the cash in the wall. The police told us it was lucky she was away. In her waning Bronx neighborhood, the thieves would as likely have killed her as not. My dh's cousins, on whom mil doted, made similar rude comments to him, but they didn't apologize. Sue

I told her #1 a thief is smart and will look there...And what if the dryer , being electric would some how catch on fire?

She does use her bank...She has a savings and checking account
She also has a safe deposit box. But insists that with the way things are she don't want to put all her money in the bank. That if it would lock its doors she'd have nothing to live on.

I tried to talk her into getting a safe...but she says no , even bolted down a thief could still take it.

Even when she goes on vacation..her money and jewelry is in her dryer

So if you can help me out here. What is the safest place for her to keep her money at home? Is it safer somewhere outside so it wouldn't burn up if the house burns down ?
There is no way I can talk her into putting it all in the bank.
I haven't yet bothered to read the replies here, so here goes... what in the world are you trying to accomplish by coming on a public forum and telling the world about how to best rob your mom? Are you going to hang a big sign on her house too? If you were my child you would be in a world of hurt right now. Seriously, get a clue and zip up.

Trust that technology and see exactly how far it takes you, in any kind of emergency. I trusted my wallet full of 'emergency only' credit cards up until a hurricane event a few years back. The cc home office was in the disaster area, and no transactions would go through... luckily I had enough cash for my dry ice needs. Technology only works with grid power. Grid goes bye bye, so does technology. Real Shtf episode, and FDIC will be just four letters. Any and all outside assistance, govt. or private, and any kind of insurance, will be just promises that can't be filled. Hopefully No One on this board dies because of false based hope. Hopefully the 500$ was in silver, or at the minimum, nickel 5 cent pieces... (they're worth 7.5c right now). 500$ in FRN's wouldn't be worth cracking the concrete for, if we keep going in the direction we're headed. That $500 might buy a pack of bubblegum.

Unless I've gone to my heavenly reward, "someone" seeing something suspicious on my place had best be worrying about me, the backhoe, and the north pasture (that needs organic matter ). I don't look too kindly on any strangers poking around, especially if they haven't been invited.

Know I've told the story about the great uncle that searched for his dad's fruit jars of gold, that he hid somewhere on the place (1.5 miles from here), after he found the kids playing tiddly winks with em. Great uncle searched for decades for the gold..... with a geiger counter. The gold is still there somewhere! I had a backhoe burying the remains of a barn I salvaged, and I kept my eyes peeled... jumped off once and raced over to the hole... was the edge of a tin can, and not a ring off of a gold filled mason jar.

This thread reminds me of my granddad. He had jars of money buried all over around his place when he died. Within a month or so his yard looked like it had been invaded by gophers where some of the kinfolk had been busy trying to find it. I mentioned to grandma that they were stealing her money, and that she really should put a stop to it. She just smiled at me and said "dont worry about them, they are too durn lazy to dig deep enough, all they are getting is a little bit that he buried after he got sick."

Put it in a waterproof container and bury it under the compost pile, LOL.

So I should bury quarters rather than bills....no problem, I usually only have quarters anyway!

Another person who is way too cautious. Not like she posted her mom's address. No one on here knows where she lives. It wouldn't be worth it to anyone but a crackhead to find out. Can't imagine many crackheads read this forum, or would be able or willing to do some real work to rob this woman.

Years ago there was a fellow that kept money hid in a wood heating stove even from his wife and one october he went on a day trip. Turned cold and wife built a fire. he came home to ashes. My great grandmother hid money behind the wall paper, she would make and opening and put a few bills in and then paste the paper back . when she died they had to tare all the wall paper off to find her money. There is no safe way but what ever you decide you can not tell anyone or trouble comes. If anyone can find who you mother is she has trouble. The less said is best. I know someone who has money in the deep freeze, a lot, I am sure he thinks no one knows but his wife told someone and around it goes. all of his family knows now.

Yes...you're right...You havent read the thread.I mentioned this forum
And she was in agreement that it would be good to ask.

This may be a public forum ....but may I ask you how do you think you can figure out my name? Where I live much less my mother?
I am laughing here .I have been on forums for years.15 years honestly and have NEVER had anyone try to figure out my name..Much less where I live.
Anyone who would even attack another poster for this is a bit paranoid I believe.

Maybe you should also read the whole thread about the worry of fire in her mobile home...etc before posting
I did nothing to warrant this attack from you

LOL...yep you're right...
Not like I said my name is.......
And I live here........
My Moms name is..........
And her address is this.......
Oh by the way...heres her phone number ............
So you can you can do a reverse phone look up on her address...and mapquest it for easy access.

"IF" the person had bothered to read the thread she would have seen that Mom wanted me to ask...and that no personal info was given.
And maybe they would have "zipped it" before posting such a weird post.

I'm done with this now. I enjoy this forum. Love reading and post seldom unless its to tell someone to feel better....beautiful pics,or that I'm praying for them. So back to enjoying the forum
