The original parcel here, 37 acres, was not zoned ag since the previous owner had about 6 acres cut for hay which didn't meet the $1,000 production. We applied and got it once we proved the $1,000 minimum production.

Our land is zoned Ag. If we live on it and have even a small garden and some animals, it's taxed as farm. If we don't live on it, it's taxed as recreational. (a much higher tax rate...3x as high) That's in a south central county in Wisconsin.

IN MN you have to have a minimum of 10 acres and be able to prove you are producing something for sale (ie: sales reciepts, schedule F, etc). There are a few other programs like Green Acres, Forest management, etc. In MN the Dept of Revenue has information online for those programs.

I know a good many farmers here; a few can support their families exclusively from farming, others require a job on the side. But I am not aware of any among them who qualify.

On the other hand we have 150 acres of 'treegrowth'. Mostly wild forest, some swamp, and some orchards. I find it much easier to fit into the qualification of 'treegrowth' to get the tax break.
Wait, you do realize you made a typo, it is $2000 _total_ income, not per acre as you said at first???

This is directly from your state web site:

In the farmland program, the property owner is required to have at least 5 contiguous acres in their tract of land. The land must be used for farming, agriculture, horticulture and can include woodland and wasteland. Additionally, the tract must contribute at least $2,000 gross income from farming activities, each year.

Thanks for all the great responses, and sorry for not putting my location in my profile.

Since posting, I have received my assessment, and it has information on how to appeal my classification.

Uh boy, what fun.
