So, the question is: will Carharts purchased today last for 33 years?
I tend to think not. Mine is only 2 years old, and this is the first winter I've worn it daily for farm work.

The material is already wearing on the sleeves, and the zipper pull tab broke.

I'll be surprised if I get 5 years out of it.

I have a pair of the brown Carhartt bibs that are about 10 years old and still going strong.

I was looking at Carhartt items in a catalog the other day and it all said "imported" in the description. I hope that was incorrect.

I wrote Carhartt a letter recently asking that very question. They assured me that they are not manufacturing in China or overseas but in fact Mexico, the response stated "some of the products". Apparently this has been the case for sometime now.

The ones that really broke my heart was the new pair of Danner boots I bought (first pair I have needed to buy in ~10 years). When I got them, turned the box over and sure enough Made in China. They still have a couple of styles made here, but WAY out of price range. Wrote them a letter too, apparently when LaCrosse bought them they moved most production to China. Sadly just because it always has been a Made in America brand doesn't mean it stays that way. I have learned to not "trust" any of them. My next pair of boots will be either Wesco or Whites. Sadly I doubt very much that will be in 10 years.

On subject most of my wardrobe is Carhartt, much of it at least 10 years old. I have several jackets, but I still have the first one I bought for myself 18 years ago, pretty faded and a little worn in spots but I still love it.

Honestly, I don't own one. I have what I call a farmer's jacket. Plain green outside, corduroy collar, green big buttons, with a wool liner. Found it at a store 6 years ago, end of winter sale for $25 big ones. Covers my butt on a tractor seat, and keeps me warm. No offense, not into name brands.

bought mine the first week of january 1999 , wore it ever since , as to it's condition , the cuffs and the bottom edge are in shreds same around the pockets but not near as bad just very worn

it has faded some it was a darker brown longer length coat sized big enough to go over a quilted flanel underneith and thats how i were it when it is cold

i now have it's replacment DW got it last spring on clearance , same length same basic style , the new one lacks the snapps for the snap on hood that i never had any way , also they added inside pokets with zippers thats good , but it is still stiff and needs some more breaking in , they also changed the zipper it is now a 2 peice so you can zip up the open up from the bottom so that you cna bend over easier ect.. only problem is it makes the zipper harder to start i guess it needs some breaking in also.

if i was doing regular work say construction daily,i might get 2-3 years from one but with wear as a regular coat and only working with it on on weekends 10 years or so , it depends a lot on the work.

I have about 4 Car jackets . .will last my life time.

But the fun one I got at a 'storage unit' auction couple years ago.
There was this 'box lot' . . in the bottom of this big box was a black Carhart-quilted-hooded jacket . . . .I bid . . .a woman looked at me and glared . .and she bid . . . . . .
Yup I prevailed . . .I bid all the way up to 12 bucks . . and got a 90+ dollar jacket.
The woman was killing me with the daggers from her glaring disaproval that I had dared to bid against her..............

Boy did that hood do the job when walking behind the snowblower.

the carhart kid..........

I don't know what all Carrhart makes in Mexico now, but I do know the chore coat I bought in the fall of 2009 says "Made in USA. Produced by UFCW union labor." This was a major selling point with me. I'll pay more than I would otherwise to get American made.

I agree completely.

And I think that's why my DH, most of the guys I know, artificer, etc. get 2-3 years. They're actually working (that is, their jobs) in their coats, rather than just wearing them for chores and such.

I had one for around 15 years... got to be dangerous wearing it... parts were getting shed wayyy too often. And then, "It" happened. Got a good smattering of blood on it, and threw it 'in' the washer. Shoulda known better all that came out was some buttons, a collar, and jacket bones.

Back when I was living on the edge, I'd wear the same pair of carharrt overalls for 2 months straight... they'd actually get stronger with every day of wear. When it came time to leave deer camp, washing them was fun...

I can't imagine my husband getting 10+ years from a pair of bibs & jacket. He's lucky to get 2-3. (and maybe a replaced zipper in there too)

I've been buying Carhartt coats and pants for the last 20 years and I've never gotten better than 4 or 5 years out of any of them. I must treat mine a lot rougher than most. I've started buying Keys brand and a few others, their quite a bit cheaper and last just as long.

Gotta admit, they get more comfortable as time goes. But saving one after 3 or 4 years use, is pushing it really hard.

The cuffs wear out, the bottom edges wear out, the arms against your side. Pretty soon they're threads, and they lose a lot of thier insulative ability.

Never had ANY everyday coat last more than three or four years? Regardless, I like Carhart... maybe it's the canvas? I've bought other canvas coats that have lasted as well, though.

The biggest thing to staying warm is layering! And I'm not talking about being able to pull things off if you feel a sweat building. You dress for the weather presented.

There are no longer any Carhartts that are made in the US. The Union Labor line that was still made in the US shut down serveral months ago.

My current Car is 2. They used to last longer but now 2-3 yrs seems average for me.

Like Levi's, they seem to be selling on past reputation. It's too bad but I will go for the cheaper ones now. Started wearing other pants than levi's in the last year. They just don't last anymore.

Twenty years ago or so, I was given an old pair of Carhartt overalls, and wore them constantly for another ten years (they were at least that old when I got them). I could still be wearing them, but when we moved from New Hampshire back to Oregon, they were one of the things that didn't make the cut for our limited space. I've regretted leaving them behind.

A year or so ago, I got a new pair of Carhartt pants, and had to quit wearing them a couple of months ago because the fabric was worn out on the inside of the thighs. I'd been wearing them for at least part of the day almost every day, but still....

I, too, think I will be looking for a different brand in the future.

Kathleen
