Big warm-up coming Mid-February

I have heard the long range forecast and there is supposed to be a big warm-up coming in Mid-February, not sure how long it will last or if it is going to cool down after or not. This could play a role in an early maple syrup season in the Northeast. I sure hope spring gets here soon. Chris

Alice In TX/MO 02/07/11 07:37 AM

I hope you are right!

therunbunch 02/07/11 07:43 AM

I hope so too!

AngieM2 02/07/11 07:50 AM

About Sat or Sunday is suppose to be when we start warming up, overall.

Man I sure hope that's correct, I've had enough winter.

Our Little Farm 02/07/11 07:53 AM

That would be nice since I have chanced it and have lettuce and spinach in covered containters on my porch! :) So far the weather has been good and I can bring them in if need be. Just desire some fresh salad!

Callieslamb 02/07/11 07:57 AM

well, I have snow coming down right now....But it is warmer out today already. However, with all the snow here I am not excited about the melting that mades mud. Ugh! if we get warmer now I am sure we will be in for more cold in March. I think it's easier on the animals if the temps stay one way or another rather than bouncing around....but I'm ready for something besides winter too.

Belfrybat 02/07/11 08:23 AM

Texas is due for another artic front on Tues/ Wed with snow/ ice predicted. Then it looks like it will be warming some (at least up to "normal" whatever that is) for the next couple of weeks. Certainly hope so!

Wisconsin Ann 02/07/11 09:33 AM

We get plunged into the deep freeze again this week, but by the weekend it's supposed to be 24ish, and then 40!! next week! hubba hubba!! (where's that Hula Dancer smiley? ;) )

Winter started early here, and it's been nasty for the South/east (hope everyone is surviving okay there); but.. it's February already! Light increasine a few minutes every day and Spring is JUST around the corner! (someone go give her money to take a taxi instead of waiting for the bus, will you?)

olivehill 02/07/11 09:37 AM

I hope you're right, but I'm skeptical to say the least.

We're forecasted for an "arctic air mass" to move in tonight and stay until Friday morning. They say it's going to get up to the mid-thirties after that, but we'll see... they've also been saying that our lows were supposed to be in the twenties the past week and we've been waking up to single digits at best. I am DONE with winter.

Every year at this time I'm ready to just buy a ticket for the next plane to Hawaii. Warm. Sun. Swimming. flowers. ahhhhhh.

..... and then I go shovel the driveway again.

From the weatherman in Grand Rapids MI

Quote:

A word of caution: The GFS has it warming to the mid 40s by 2/18 and the European has our height up to 562 early next week. Before you go bonkers over a warm up, keep in mind we have 1-2 feet of snow on the gr0und. Often in this situation, the temperature warms to the mid-upper 30s and stops. We get stratus and drizzle or if cold enough freezing drizzle. So, beware of the models forecasting a big warm-up…it may not turn out the way you’d expect.
Darn! But I do like that he doesn't tend to get overly optimistic like some.

A girlfriend and I were just talking about this yesterday afternoon. I suggested we sign up for a marathon in one of the warm locales for this time next year and fly down to run it and stay for a few days for a girls' weekend. I think we're going to try to swing it. I get so... :grump: ... by the end of winter. I need to break it up.

I was thinking florida but now that you mention Hawaii... I wonder what they've got race-wise this time of year?? Hmmm... ;)

MELOC 02/07/11 09:51 AM

this is the first year i can remember in quite some time that it did not warm up enough, here in south central pa, to make maple trees run during late december and january. it looks like my maple fun will begin somewhere around valentine's day. not sure if i will have the time and resources to sugar this year, but i will enjoy the long over-due warmth all the same. :-)

Cyngbaeld 02/07/11 10:16 AM

Mid Feb and a few weeks there after would be lovely because I have goats due to kid those weeks!

Windy in Kansas 02/07/11 11:41 AM

I just took a look at two ten day forecasts and the temperatures for here are forecast to be just a few degrees above normal for the latter part of the ten days. There is nothing unusual about having some really warm days during January, February, March, and April, at least not here.

I would welcome a nice big warm up that has some duration.

MOgal 02/07/11 11:48 AM

I'm so tired of the cold and snow that I really don't have words to express myself. However, I don't want so much warmth that our fruit trees break dormancy too early then get zapped by cold later as happened in April '07. I guess you need an even keel somewhere but Mom Nature sure isn't providing it!

Old Vet 02/07/11 02:19 PM

I hope so you need to turn off the fan that is bringing the cold air down here.

Oldcountryboy 02/07/11 05:25 PM

I sure hope it warms up too. Around here we haven't had much public school for 3 weeks, especially if we get another 8 inches of snow on top of what we've got now. It'll be next monday before we can go back and if it all melts in the 50 plus weather there calling for next weekend, then it might be too muddy for the busses to run down the dirt roads. It's gonna be a mess when it does melt.

ronbre 02/07/11 06:13 PM

not that warm I don't think, they say maybe 30's for Fri, Sat and Sun maybe part of Mon and then I think colder again.

tinknal 02/07/11 08:28 PM

Hope springs eternal...... (or is it "spring hopes eternal?)

farmerbrian 02/07/11 10:12 PM

We got a two day mini warm up yesterday and today and we really, really needed it.

On top of hte two feet of snow on ground we had an ice storm on Tuesday last week, driveway was slippery but passable. THEN it rained all day Saturday and temps dropped overnight. Sunday morning was end of the world apocalypse-crawl on your hands and knees as soon as you leave the front door- ice everywhere.

There was nothing I could do about it besides let the sun work its magic...I already had plans to visit family so I just slid down the driveway and hoped for the best. Came back around dusk expecting to trudge through the 2feet of snow snow carrying two kids after getting stuck on the driveway but instead found two inches of slush! :D 40 and sunny!

What a relief! Had to remind myself that despite having a far worse than normal winter this season, they just arent that bad in CT.

O L F I will try to post a Thread " planting for Winter..bottom line keep things covered...you'll be amazed.

Ken Scharabok 02/09/11 12:14 PM

The local have what they call "mini-winters" . Four as I recall, one was the Dogwood Winter and another the blackberry flower winter. Don't recall the other three and one of the ones I gave may not be correct.

Essentially it is mild weather followed by a brief cold snap.

my3boys 02/09/11 03:17 PM

I'm in south central PA and starting Sunday we are warming up significantly. By mid-week I think we are having highs in the low 50s! At least according to Accuweather anyway.

I for one am ready for this snow to melt! The plows have pushed the snow so far up the sides of our driveway I can hardly see around or over them to back out. We have a lot of Amish here and their buggies can't get off to the side of the road like they usually do because of the plowed snow that just won't melt. Makes running errands a little more interesting (and time-consuming!).

Pam6 02/09/11 04:12 PM

I really hope it is going to warm up! I am ready for mud season...I mean spring!

Pony 02/09/11 04:30 PM

Headed into the 40's throughout the next week, starting Friday. Overnight lows in the 20's.

I, too, am looking forward to M&M Season. (That's Mud and Manure...)

GrannyG 02/09/11 04:41 PM

We are in the deep freeze again today...and school is closed....looking at eight degrees tonight....and colder tomorrow..hopefully will see a little warmth on Friday...Brrrrrrr..Come on Warm Up and git-r-done....

Love "M&M Season". That's exactly what it is here, too. And I am more than ready for it.

Boy, I hope you're correct also! I'm SO tired of high winds and freezing weather! Although fortunately we haven't had the snow here lately in Southern Idaho.

Old Vet 02/09/11 09:44 PM

It is supposed to be 65 by next week in Arkansas the only bad thing is the tornadoes that come with that.

Pony 02/09/11 11:31 PM

Dang. It just occurred to me that I'd better pray for moderation in the moderate temps, b/c I don't want the orchard to start blooming early.

Wisconsin Ann 02/10/11 09:30 AM

Our weather lady keeps pushing back the date and lowering the temps of "the big warmup" :( First it was going to happen Wed. this week, and we'd have temps in the 40s by the weekend. well....

It's Thursday, we had -10 last night, and it's going to warm up to a whopping 2 today. Weekend IS going to be warmer. maybe 30ish.

ah well. It's almost March. I can last another couple of weeks.
