I think that this is gonna be harder for the folks who don't usually get this kind of weather. In NY our water lines don't usually freeze up because of the way that our houses are built and plumbing is buried and/or insulated. Our power doesn't usually go out in a winter storm, either...Though it could happen! Stay safe, even if it means that you are unable to go home. Stay indoors as much as possible and enjoy the family time...That is the best way to ride out a winter storm.

Only thing I can say about all this snow is it makes good insulation.

We are supposed to get 8 -14 inchs in western NY. In early dec. we got 50 some inches in a day. It is a typical day in WNY, and I thought when the stupid lake froze we would stop getting snow like this and then this storm blows up.

I always got a laugh at New York posted height on Overpasses always allows for snow.

We got a fair amt. of ice yesterday and it started up again about three hours ago. The snow is on its way (blizzard warnings now). I lucked out and have today and tomorrow off so just baked a couple loaves of pumpkin bread and started a pot of chili.
It's a good thing this doesn't happen often around here because I'd be cooking and eating way too much!

It is snowing so hard here that you cannot see across the hard road. It's white out conditions. We have about 5-6in so far, and they say another 17-22 will fall throughout the night.

Just tried to make it to the shed, about 15 yds from back door. First step was over my knees. Stepped away from the house, and snow went up to my hips. Never did make it to the shed cuz' I could see that the drifts were over 4 foot high between me and the shed. The wind is about 30-40 MPH. I needed a walking stick to keep from blowing over.

We gave the goats and the dogs (Pyrenees) extra food yesterday, so I guess they will just have to make do in their shelters until at least the wind slows down. They all have water, but they have to leave their shelters to get it. It is over 100 yds. from the house to their shelters.

It was reported that my county had 13 inches of snow as of around 10:30 am. It's still blowing out there so we've got quite a bit more than that now. We had only a bit of sleet around 1 am and I heard it thunder as well. I'm enjoying watching something I've never seen before. Dogs and cats are fine and we have plenty of food. I've been baking all day to help keep the house warm. The wind is really whipping out there!

I’m dead center of the storm right now. Started snowing and blowing about 9am and hasn’t stopped. I’d guess we got 6” but hard to tell cause it’s fine powder and drifting. They predicted 15-20”. If it stays powder there won’t be much worry about power going out… It’s not even sticking to the roof. Tomorrow morning will be a frantic mess, to bad everyone can’t just stay at home… they are predicting 38 degrees by Saturday.

Here's a thought for you mamato3...we get our groceries from Springfield and I-44 is closed down from Republic to the OK border. They said on the news that it will be closed until the weekend most likely. Now, in my hometown that is 8 miles from me, they ran out of milk at the stores last night. Grocery trucks usually come on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I'm guessing the trucks won't be running on Thursday! With I-44 closed down it's going to cause a lot of problems for us in the small towns. That is if you aren't prepared.

Our goats have to go about 20' from their barn to reach water but with a +4' drift, they aren't even trying it. I had a big heated bucket inside the barn and DH carried hot water to the barn for me while I made a detour to check on the chickens. I used the hot water to encourage them to drink while they had the chance. It was all both of us could do to reach the barn. It's still snowing like crazy. I tried to take out our GSD house dog and retired 12 y/o male Pyr who has earned house dog status so they could relieve themselves before I go to bed. They were having none of it although they did follow me out into the yard. It was all I could do to walk through the snow, well over my knees. We have a drift outside the side door that is as tall as the one at the barn.

We lost power for about an hour or so this afternoon and switched gears to protect ourselves and the house. We were so glad when the lights came back on.

Our mail carrier didn't make his rounds today due to the conditions. Personally, I don't mind a bit. I'd rather know our communities' mail carriers are safe than get a piece of junk mail.

Our local tv stations from Columbia and Jeff announced that I-70 was closed from KC to St. Louis so MoDOT could get it completely cleaned off. At that point they were saying it would stay closed through today.

Our old male Pyr and the GSD were anxious to get out this morning. He went out into the yard immediately but I don't think she ever stepped off the porch.

We have a 4 1/2' drift all across the concrete pad just outside our east door where our firewood is stored. I didn't think I could get it any closer to the house but not it might as well be almost on the moon. I'm going to get DH up in a little while to be my trail breaker to get to the barn. We had a 3' drift in front of the walk in door last night. I don't want to think about what it will be this morning.

Have I mentioned to anyone that I hate snow. I'm not too fond of this cold either.

Compared to most of you, we didn't get much-about 3" of ice/ snow, but it shut us down. Mail truck couldn't get from Abilene to our town yesterday, and might not today. Same for grocery truck that comes on Wednesday. It stayed around 20 all day yesterday but the sun was out so the top of the ice/snow melted a bit and with a low of 8 this morning, the roads will be treacherous. The three single pane windows in the house all have ice inside. I haven't experienced that since I lived in Germany as a teen.

I kept the fire going all night since the house is all electric and I was afraid of losing power. Thankfully it didn't happen. All that is predicted today is light snow flurries, but low tonight is supposed to be about the same as last night. Just too cold and for too long, especially for this area. Monday I was working ouside in a t-shirt and shorts, today I'm hunkering down in two sweaters and socks. Argh!

Makes me think of old black and white photos I've seen of a rope strung between the house and barn when huge snowstorms hit.

I would say we got 18-20" of snow but it is hard to tell. There is close to 2 ft everywhere and drifts are up to the center of my chest in places. DW and I tag teamed enough to get a good path shoveled to the barn, and I broke a trail to the goat sheds. Took them a bunch of hay, but if they want anymore for today they'll just have to follow the trail up to the barn.

Lesson learned...For the next major storm we will confine them to the barn instead of letting them stay in the sheds.

They are soooo fat, getting ready to kid in about 30 days.

Otherwise everything is going 100%. Feels like nap time coming on!!

Stay safe everyone.
