Pick a weekend and turn off the electric for the entire weekend. See what happens and what needs to be addressed as part of a future plan. It can actually be more interesting than watching tv. And it's free. And you'll have a better idea of how that $1000 should be spent to best meet you and your families' needs for survival preps.

Something else that's free is that you begin filling every empty container with water and storing it. Not for drinking but for using to support household activities such as bathing and washing dishes and clothing. This can free up the clean water supply you keep for drinking during emergencies. You can't have too much water.
