I actually found the Dagoba Lavender Blueberry dark chocolate bar in northern Idaho...amazing! And oh wow...it's just amazing. I ate one square and told my daughter to hide the rest (and not to eat it!)

So good!!!

If you buy chocolate from Trader Joe's, then you might want to try Aldi's chocolate. I believe that they are owned by the same company. I started buying their chocolate because it doesn't have high fructose corn syrup in it and most of it seems to be made in Germany and Swtizerland. The prices are always inexpensive and it tastes like the expensive stuff that I've purchased from Lindt, Godiva, Ethel M, etc...

I'll second the suggestion about the chocolate at Aldi's. It really IS excellent chocolate. (MMMM, chocolate; one of my favorite topics!)

Yay! Glad you found it and you like it. I hide mine, partially eaten and unopened, in the cabinet above the fridge. No one goes up there but me! :happy0035:

I tried a different one today: Dagoba Xocolatl. Dark chocolate, chilies and nibs.
So good, and it has a nice little burn to it.

I think that some of the chocolate companies (Hershey) take the cocoa fat off to sell to cosmetic companies, thus making money from something that can be skimmed from their regular product, and then use the leavings to make chocolate bars, etc. At least that's what our local chocolatier tells us. He says that's what makes the big difference in flavor and texture, and there certainly is a big difference, if you taste them together.

I've seen chocolate with chili peppers and wondered how it tasted but never tried it. I do like spicy food-maybe I'll bite the bullet and grab one next time I'm at the store. The fru-fru grocery up the street has a huge, albeit pricey, chocolate section. Definitely an indulgence!

Is anyone sure the other companies don't buy their cocoa from ----ries with slave labor? Since cocoa is not grown in the US how can you be sure?

The chocolate that Lisa and I are talking about is this:

http://www.dagobachocolate.com/circle.asp

Most chocolates you buy that cost upwards of $3 a bar won't get away with slave labor. *But* it's also labeled as such. And honestly, I didn't know about slave labor until this thread. Glad to have been exposed to it.

I think you would only get that with the cheaper chocolates. The two I buy, both are certified organic and certified fair trade.

www.greenandblacks.com
www.theochocolate.com

theo is actually made in the USA. these are the 2 I get, because that is what's available to me. I have also had this one brand, called rainforest? or something like that. Each kind had a photo of an endangered specie on the label. Good cause, but I didn't much care for the flavor.

And I have to say, if you like spicy foods, and have never had a hot pepper chocolate bar, you are depriving yourself of chocolate ecstasy.

Slave labour is actually INCREDIBLY hard to get away with these days, and I do know about this stuff, it's my job. Your American companies do have slightly different takes on ethical issues, but they are not far off what I deal with on a day to day basis. I do know for example that Wal-Mart has quite a robust ethical policy / auditing system.

Cocoa, Bananas, Diamonds, other precious Gems, Oil, etc. are all ethically quite challenging. The industries are making great strides in the right direction, I am aware of multiple ethical auditing schemes, which do quite genuinely have a big impact where they are carried out.

PLUS (and this is just my own fantasy): since spicy foods are supposed to temporarily boost your metabolism, I'm banking on the idea that the chili pepper chocolate is burning away all of it's calories so it's calorie-free chocolate!

Works for me!

Used to love Cadbury's. Enjoyed the stuff from the UK when relatives brought it back to the States.

Don't enjoy it now, because Kraft bought them, and I don't buy Kraft.
