Many times I've seen people post that instead of getting new ink cartridges, they find that a new printer costs less, so they throw away their printer and buy a new one.
This is flawed logic, as the starter cartridges in a new printer don't have much ink in them. It would actually be cheaper to buy new ink for $50 than to buy the printer for $30.

Also, I've heard some ink cartridges have a programmed expiraqtion date. If you are buying a printer that is on sale because it's been on the shelf a while, that might be a problem also.
The first HP printer I bought when I bought my first computer was great. I'm thinking I may have bought ink 3 or 4 times in the 5 years I used it and probably not colored ink that many times.
I even found an Epson in the dumpster when looking for packing material. I downloaded the program and used it for almost a year with whatever cartridge was in it.
I bought a new one because I wanted a scanner - big mistake.
It is a rip off - but again, I'm really happy with the set up my son got for me and I'm thinking the printer was really inexpensive - it just has to be one that can take the hose set up.
My daughter in law makes heat transfer T Shirts and she has been using the same set up and ink bottles for a very long time.

I have an Epson printer thatmI bought for around $50.
Then purchased a continuous ink system, off of ebay for $38.
It is exactly like the system you mentioned in your post Trixie.
A nice set up, and very reasonable.

I don't know but as a college student, I really think Lexmark printers or anything is a ripp off. The price for a replacement ink is the same as a new printer.

I think I have the same identical all in one printer and when I try the generic or refilled cartridges, it gums up the works and the print quality isn't there. I get big blurbs of ink and after a few - it stops working. My next printer will not be an HP, but for now, I buy my cartridges @ Sam's or wait til I have a coupon @ one of the office supply stores.... And trust me, there isn't any way to cancel that wasteless sheet that it prints when you switch cartridges - have tried it and even called the company....... ACK! Hate it, especially when I have product labels in and it wastes that sheet. USELESS!

Dell is putting out refilled cartridges... for every printer but Dell
But they are cheap (HP 10pk for $30 b&w 5 pk for $25 color) and we have been using them for 6 months now with no complaints.
Got off e-bay with free shipping

We've had two Brother MFC's in the last fifteen years. The cartridges and drums look expensive at first, but even with me being self-employed and doing all the business printing at home we buy toner once a year and a drum maybe once every two years, probably closer to three. Laser printers are much cheaper per page than inkjets. We save by printing on both sides of the paper and having the "toner saver" feature turned on - like when I make a copy of each invoice, it prints much lighter than the original, but is still good enough for record-keeping. I can up the darkness as needed with the push of a button. The MFC will scan and fax, too.

Why use a ink jet printer?
While I have a 3-in-1 I use basically for scanning, I have a Dell 1710 laser printer. Just printed out job sheet. It says I have used 17,360 sheets of paper on 9,797 jobs. Printer runs fine. Gives nice copies.
Since I sell a manual for an out-of-date piece of ag equipment, it paid for itself within the first week using $.04 a page as a guide.
Now I don't like how they sell you a 6,000 page cartridge and then you only get about 3,000 pages out of it. I'll call Dell Customer Service to complain and they usually send me a free cartridge. I filed a complaint with the FTC and received a call from Dell bending over backwards to make the deal good.

I have a Brother printer with four separate cartridges (black and three colors), and I got a 20 pack (4 of each color and 8 black) for $63.95. That works out to $3.19 per cartridge. Have used them for 1-1/2 years with no problems yet, and I don't have to mess with needles and messy ink, just pull out a fresh cartridge, pop it in and it's ready to go!
I had an HP printer before this one and brought a few for it from them too, same good quality, not as cheap as the Brother, but still less than half-price from the office supply.

For years I refilled my cartridges. Several different printer brands. I simply drilled small holes in them and injected new generic ink. For the last few years I have had a Brother printer with the separate cartridges. It's cheaper to buy the generic cartridges off the Internet then refill. I pay 3 or 4 bucks for each cartridge. Only change the color that runs out. They last for ever, and I'm a printing junkie. Lots of photos. The company that I use has a lot of sales with free shipping and generic cartridges for all the printers. PM me if anyone wants the company name.

Some Costco's are now refilling ink cartridges - drop your used cartridges off and an hour later they are ready. Cost me a total of $17.98 to refill one HP56 and one HP57. Would have cost me over $70 to purchase them new.

Somewhere I recall reading the cartridges which come with a new printer are only filled halfway or so. On my Dell laser there is a chip on it which counts number of pages and knows to start flashing a low toner light when it is about half empty.
I haven't tried it yet, but bought replacement powder, which included a new chip.

We have a place called cartridge world it cost me only 27 dollars to get 2 black hp cartridges and a color one. It would have been cheaper if I had brought in the old cartridge for them to use but I forgot them at home and needed the refills, so the guy gave me store credit to use the next time I go in.

Don't forget that these new printers that have that sensor in them, count PAGES printed Not the amount of ink left in them. So if you print quite a few PAGES with a paragraph or 2, that printer sensor has counted that Whole Page as if it was being Printed.
So not the question remains. These people that are saying they are running out of oink too soon. Is IT truly Empty? Or is it that Sensor telling you it is about to run out?? And are you then believing it?
If so you may not need ink at all for quite some time yet. That sensor is not telling you the amount of ink that is really left.
