I'd have to agree with Ricky Skaggs. He has one album out that is all along a gospel theme. Very good.

Ricky Skaggs, Patty Loveless, The Isaccs. I like Ralph Stanley and Bill Monroe. Some of the names here I have not heard but plan to listen via the links just as soon as I have time so, thanks for the links.

Seldom listen to recorded music but when I do... Doyle Lawson tops the list for me but I enjoy many different bluegrass/gospel type groups.

This group is new to our family, but we've really enjoyed some of their music.

We've really enjoyed 5 for the Gospel lately too!

We LOVE the Rochester Family as well, they have LOTS of great music.

Another one we really enjoy is Jimbo Whaley and Greenbriar

Ricky Skaggs really has put out a lot of great music over the years!

and our favorite of his

and of course (as so many have already said) there is Doyle Lawson, The Isaacs, Rhonda Vincent, Ralph Stanley, Bill Monroe and so many others.... one often overlooked is Marty Stewart, gotta love his bluegrass with a blues infusion!

sorry if I got carried away a bit!! There is just so much great music to share!

I have Sirius satellite radio which has a bluegrass channel and they play a lot of what's been mentioned here (the newer artists) and I'll be honest, I don't really like it. There's something about listening to old bluegrass recordings that I really enjoy. It's the same reason I love listening to old Hank Williams songs-the primitive recording methods and the clicks and pops and hisses just make you feel like you've been transported back in time. Listening to a recording of Jimmie Rodgers or Bill Monroe doing "Mule Skinner Blues" from the 1930s just gives me chills. Likewise with songs like "In the Pines" or "I Saw the Light."

This group isn't really bluegrass... I would consider them more country/Christian... Point of Grace. Those women can sing beautifully!

Doyle Lawson (as noted above)

I second the idea of seeing it all live. It doesn't compare.

carogatar , I'd have to agree with "3'rd time out." However did you know that they are all originally "Quicksilver" members and had been hired and fired by Doyle 3 times hence the name "3'rd Time Out"

Doyle is very hard to beat also. As is the Issacs. I've personnally met and played with pretty much all of the people listed in this thread. Ex FIL has played professional Bluegrass for about 40 yrs and knows most of the groups personnally. Set in alot of jam sessions with these guys. Set in a jam session with Larry Sparks and was taught a thing or five on the guitar. I swear the older he gets the better he gets.

No Speed Limit. Not completely gospel but 100% bluegrass with a touch of "old tyme"

http://www.myspace.com/nospeedlimitva

Also not primarily gospel (although they do some) is Reeltime Travelers (Old Time music not bluegrass):

http://www.myspace.com/reeltimetravelers

After that it would have to be the Stanley Brothers.

Ralph Stanley will always be one of the very best. I'm also a big fan of Ricky Scaggs and The Whites.

Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice made a bluegrass gospel album back in the day... aptly called Skaggs and Rice. One of my all time favorites. (Out of thousands of cds) Played several of the songs at my Pa's funeral. {Unfortunately, the funeral director ended up playing the entire cd, at the 'end', because there were so many folks filing through the last viewing, and "More Pretty Girls Than One" played... oops... Had some "splaining" to do with some Aunts later on ... but I know he'd'a appreciated it}

A fan of The Seldom Scene- and I especially like their version of "Life Is Like A Mountain Railway".
