I would have taken more time off. I would have traveled more, camping while it was very affordable and seen more Americana. I would have spent less time and money trying to buy self sufficiency, it's an illusion.

Amen to the illusion idea. I was raised to think raising one's own stuff was necessary for survival, but have slowly learned that it takes more money and energy than buying. I now enjoy what I do more, because I admit it's just a hobby. The less I do, the less money I lose.

I've read that the one's who consume the fewest resources live in New York City.

Someday I'll move into town and have a small garden in the back yard and really take care of it, instead of trying to do it all on more space, and neglecting much of it.

I turn 55 in about 2 weeks. The main things I'd do differently is save, save, save and pay my house off.

Looking back I can't remember one impulse purchase that I am glad I purchased, or for that matter even remember period...It's was mostly just junk I eventually got rid of and money spent I didn't save... Do yourself a favor and ask yourself before you spend money. where are you going to store this? How are you going to use this and how often? will it make my life easier? where will it be in five years? ... I also would have worked harder and gotten further along on primary purchases while I was young and things paid off....There is going to come a day when you will realize that you just can't work the way you used to it happens to everyone.

Amen
I am 'feeling' my mortality.
I cannot work 12 hour days, slinging 40lb trays on my should like I could 20 years ago......
My back, hips, knees, and feet hurt.
Pinched a nerve 2 years ago. Doc did an MRI. Said "you are wearing out your C4 and C5....you need a new line of work".
I said "yeah right, I am too old to learn new tricks".
He said "you'll wished you had changed professions, sooner....not later"

I blew him off......but here in the last couple of months, I have really given what he said, a lot of thought.
I can't wait tables, forever.....
