These are great! I recognize, and remember, many of what has been shared so far! Here are some of mine ... off the top of my head.
Paternal Great-Grandfather (1895-1991)
* "Never look a gift horse in the mouth."
* "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."
* "Never kick a man when he's down."
* "You come from good stock."
* "Make you want to slap your grandmother."
He'd bellow that after a good meal - have no idea where it came from - but it was meant as delicious/wonderful.
He'd also say it if he was inviting somebody over for supper too, like ...
* " Ella Mae can make a mean pineapple upside-down cake ... knock your socks off ... make you wanna slap your grandmother!"
Maternal Grandfather (1907-1998)
* "Brookie, bundle up, you'll freeze yer cricket off."
* "You kids bundle up. You'll freeze yer crickets off ... and yer frogs." (I, like you, can only guess ... but I repeat it, today, with authority!)
* "Pull my finger."
* "People are just dying to get in there." (After we'd pass a large cemetery/graveyard.)
* I think I just stepped on a frog!" (He'd jump, and look at the ground all shocked, after he farted.)
Father (1946)
* "Here. Come cry in my hand."
* "Whatever you do, do it good."
* "If you're gonna mess up, might as well mess up good."
* "Don't confuse activity with results."
* "Dream big."
* "You can be anything you want to be ... you can do anything you want to do."
* "Failure is not an option."
* "Every no puts you that much closer to your yes."
* "Assume: makes an ass out of you and me."
