Thirteen lined ground squirrels make a 1 1/2" dia hole. They like open areas and clip the grass short around the hole.

OK, I've been watching tv for a while. I'm not sure if I am drunk on tv, or I am in some sort of alternate universe. Do I have this right?
Thirteen squirrels will make a 1 1/2" hole. (I'm not sure how they hold the ruler)
Termites are home invaders (should I get out my pistol?)
Crayfish invade chimneys... (O. M. G...)
Armadillos are in heaven and earth. (Does Saint Peter know?)
Moles.
Skunks.
I'm waiting for lions and tigers and bears (Oh my...)
Now if I can just convince this gopher to get out of my pocket...

Your baby dung beetles are hatching! Congratulations, Mom!
They are beneficial insects. They keep down the fly populations by toting away the dung and burying it with an egg. Larvae hatches inside the buried dung ball and converts it to a hollow ball of beetle larvae dung, then it magically changes into a beetle and breaks out!
Your birds will eat them.

Oh, tumble bugs!!! I have never seen their holes, but that could be just because I never looked.

Are they actual holes, like tunnels? Or deep indentations?

Harry you are so funny! Thanks for the laugh. Jill, love those pictures.
Since the holes are "open", I would suspect something "hatching"; so I would not concern myself with them until I find out for sure if some live new creature shows up.

well we do have skunks around here...to add to the mystery, by some of the holes are little piles of poop.....not big enough to be dog, cats bury theirs.....this area is surrounded by hot wire, temporary, two strands the lowest one about 10 inches from the ground...to discourage dogs from getting near the pastured birds....
I am personally ruling out the clawed creatures....don't have them around here...the dirt is piled up evenly around the holes, mostly though bad golfers is a thought...I don't think they are entrances to tunnels, I think the holes are not deep....something emerging but what at this time of the year? ....back to skunks.....but what are they doing ? if nothing else this has been an interesting thread to read ...and I do appreciate the thoughts....

If it's skunks they are probably digging grubs.

Same thing happening around here and I too was wondering what's causing this. Never had the problem before!
Now yesterday, I seen two skunks wondering up a gully from the lake. Huh, guess I have my answer

Any animal digging down would not leave dirt piled up evenly around the holes.

I'd say it is the beetles because of the description on the holes.
